Under wipe menu, did System, Factory Reset, Dalvik, and Cache.

Installed new ROM.

No change. Still in boot screen forever.

EDIT:

Removing checkbox from rm-rf in settings. Re-wiping as before then going to reboot before install new rom...

EDIT...er.

Worked! Needed to remove the check from rm -rf to get a good format.

Thanks for your help. It's people like you, man.

Cheers.

Glad to hear you got it working :)

Trying to root a first gen Kindle Fire on Windows 8 64 bit. It's not working. What can I do? The tool just crashes.

When running "install_drivers" it says Windows cant find /drivers/dpinst64.exe. Make sure you typed name correctly, and then try again. Same error for the other batch file, just cannot find 'wget'

I have problems with Kindle Fire Utility v0.9.6 (5/09/12) on Win XP SP2 Italian version

First problem: When I try to install driver: The current language is not supported by the Device Driver Installation Wizard.

Second problem: I resolve the first problem , but Kindle Fire Utility press 5 , install FireFireFire ok , then fastboot waiting for device......

Device have "KINDLE FIRE LOGO" for ever , windows ADB driver not found.......Under device manager I see "Unknow device" it's not possible to get the right driver ADB working. Installation ok.....but device unknow under device manager........

Just picked up a SUPER cheap fire from work running 6.31. I tried using this utility and it seemed to be working fine. It installed the SU.apk and said it stalled twrp but when I sideloaded an app to reboot to recovery I had no root privileges. Strangely the run.bat also did not give me any "menu" for selecting the options I wanted to have it run. I just used the screenshot from the first page to install SU and twrp (which obviously didn't work).

After that I tried the utility again and now nothing is recognizing the fire. The utility is saying ADB online but cannot perform any functions or find the device. I factory'd it to see if that wonky SU was an issue and fastboot commands do not seem to recognize it. I've looked at 3 or 4 different guides but nothing is seeming to recognize the tablet. What am I missing here?

Weird... I'm also running Windows 8 64-bit and this tool works flawlessly... You do know Win8 is basically the same as Win7, just with some fancy UI. Have you tried to manually install the drivers?

To all the people having problems: Please note that this tool hasn't been updated since early summer... If you are not on the original Kindle Fire, this tool will not work. If you are on a software version greater than 6.3, this tool will most likely not work. If it is still not working, post EXACTLY what system you're running (I.e. Windows 7 sp1 64-bit) and what you're trying to do and any errors you get in the process, as it will be much easier to help you.

I thought everything was good. I have TWRP. However, when I try to install a ROM, it never get past "verifying partition sizes". I also get system is read-only when I try to do certain things from the utility.

Any ideas? I am using the latest version of the utility. Kindle is on 6.3.1 before I started fooling around.

I wiped cache, dalvik, system partition, and factory reset already.

Any ROM I install gets stuck on the boot screen.

I am able to restore the backup I luckily took of the Kindle before I started playing around.

What message hid can you use then? Downgrade Kindle version or? ??

What do you mean by message hid? Also, this tool was only tested on 6.3.x and below, so if you're on something greater than 6.3.x, then try other root methods for your firmware. Also, there are two variants of the standard Kindle Fire now, so if you recently bought a new one, I doubt it will work due to the new bootloader (1st Generations had an unlocked bootloader, 2nd Gen models have a pretty locked up bootloader)

Sorry didn't read this post first. I may be able to solve your problem... Do you still have root+TWRP and FFF installed?

Just to be absolutely clear.

I rooted my device using this method about a week ago. To COMPLETELY UNROOT (restoring everything, including boot, recovery, etc) I can download the update.zip from this utility, and flash in TWRP? This should be all i need, correct?

I know this has been talked about over, and over, and over again. I just dont want any surprises.

Thanks ahead of time.

EDIT: I know i need to factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik. Do I/Can I wipe system as well? Will this wipe the Storage of the device.ie remove all my music?

To unroot your kindle and save your music, all you have to do is get the latest firmware update from amazon, rename it to update.zip(KFU does this for you) and place in the root of your sdcard. Wipe everything except System(it will be wiped upon update through TWRP) and External Storage(your SDCard) Then you will be fully unrooted and on stock

Great, Thanks.

So from what you are saying, it will not wipe the SD card. Also, it will wipe system during the process. (i ask because i have CM10 installed, and i want to go back to Amazon stock)

How much battery should i have before starting the process?

Anything else i should know about?

Btw, I did use KFU to download the update.zip. It also unzipped it and put it in a different folder. Obviously, i will use the .zip

WARNING: DO NOT use this on 2nd Generation Devices or you risk bricking your Device.

These procedures are for FIRST GENERATION Devices ONLY. In otherwords, for the ORIGINAL KF. If you proceed to use this on your 2nd Generation Device, and you BRICK it, don't complain. You have been warned.

This thread is also no longer maintained. A new Thread has been opened.

    The new Thread

    MD Moderator XDA

Hi all, some of you may have seen my utility over in the de-bricking thread. My goal at this point is to try and make lives easier for everyone I can.

So what I have done is created a script that can be used to handle a lot of common things people may want, and I will continue to add things people request that I think would be easy, and beneficial. I just wanted to make this situation easier for the average person.

You will see how the tool detects you at the default screen, and can refresh it by hitting 0 at any menu to have it refresh ADB/Fastboot and see what mode the kindle is in.

    Currently the tool does:

    • Automatic elevation to root for tool operations.
    • Full root install.
    • Auto detect current bootmode.
    • Auto Detect ADB/Fastboot Online/Offline.
    • Auto download update.zip from Amazon.
    • Auto download and install TWRP Recovery.
    • Auto download and install CWM Recovery.
    • Auto download and install FFF Bootloader.
    • Manage current bootmodes.
    • Manage Read/Write.
    • Install GoogleApps/Market/GoLauncherEX.
    • Lock/Unlock the Wallpaper from being changed.

Currently the tool comes packaged with the drivers required to operate ADB and Fastboot.

Please note: If your device can't be seen in fastboot mode, please make sure to install the drivers packaged with this, as it will show up afterwards. You can use the install_drivers.bat with the device plugged in for this.

Usage should be straight forward for the tool. If you are having issues with something, this tool has a good chance of getting you back on track. This issue was found and fixed using this post: Click me Over at Rootzwiki.

I make no claim that this tool is perfect, but I certainly will do my best to support it as long as people like it.

Here are some screen-shots of it:

Version .3 = Added an extras menu with a few features to help people out!

    Known Tricks

    • If you end up stuck at the yellow triangle, in KF Utility select Boot Normal, wait for it to say <waiting for device> and then press and hold the power button 20 seconds until the fire turns off, then when its off turn it back on. This sometimes happens, I have yet to find a clean solution :(
    • If you end up stuck with a yellow triangle, do not EVER unplug it. Leave it plugged in. Check the windows drivers to make sure it isnt showing as "kindle" again. Fastboot is different and can cause this.

I tries that in my device manager it says unknow device with yellow mark when i go to update driver it says the latest is already installed

Alright. Let me guide you through this...
-Download the attachment I provide below and place it in somewhere you KNOW where you can find it easily. (I placed it in C:\android-sdk-windows\extras\google\usb_driver(I would recommend doing the same))
    -Go to device manager
-right click on the exclamation mark kindle.
    -Choose update driver software
-choose browse my computer for driver software
-choose let me pick from a list of devices on my computer
    -Then select have disk
    -Then select browse
-direct to where you downloaded the usb driver i attached
    -Select okay and okay

    New version of KFU

I PM'd VashyPooh and he is no longer supporting KFU because he doesn't own a Kindle Fire anymore. So now I will be maintaining this project for now. I am going to make a new thread and release Kindle Fire Utility v0.9.7+. Here is the new thread :) I don't know what should be done with this thread though once it becomes obsolete.

VashyPooh, thank you for what you've done here you've helped me and thousands of people root, install custom firmware, and de-brick our devices. We really appreciate what you've done for us and all the hard work you've put in to this. :good:

Also, thank you for letting me update this because now your utility will be able to help even more people. :)
