The increase in performance causing more battery drain is a myth. Of course it really depends on how performance is increased.
Take for instance if you overclock your CPU, minimum and maximum frequencies, then run a benchmark, is that really increasing performance? No not really. It's ramping up your CPU which can be very stressful on your hardware. It also decreases the life of your device.
Benchmarks apps are a complete joke, but some people swear up and down by them. Benchmarks apps are pushing buzzwords. Great for testing hardware, but software, nope. There's a lot of pieces in the software that don't produce a output for benchmark apps to read. Therefore, the benchmark apps are very limited in what they can test in real time usage. A real benchmark (not like the apps on the market), takes hours of testing in real time conditions.
Lag and stuttering also cause strain on your device and decrease battery life.
So by increasing real time usage, your actually extending the life of your device, as well as battery life. It's like giving you device a breath of fresh air.
