it's been confirmed that Nexus 5s bought from the Play Store can be activated on Sprint. what may not be widely known is that you have to visit a Sprint store in order to activate it (usually you can activate it online at Sprint's website). apparently, the phones ordered through the Play Store do not ship with the required Sprint SIM.

i loathe visiting Sprint stores so i checked if i could order a SIM card online. i was able to do it through chat, but you have to go through the Sprint Worldwide chat page here. if you ask on the regular Sprint chat page, they'll just forward you to the Sprint Worldwide page. you just need to provide them your account PIN and mailing address.

the person I chatted with didn't provide a price for the SIM so i'm assuming it's free. standard shipping is free (3-5 days) and overnight shipping is $12.95.

Update: some people have reported that they were unable to order a SIM through the Worldwide chat page. some have reported that b/c they have a SERO account, they were unable to order. i have a SERO account and i was able to place an order without issue. there seems to be no rhyme or reason for this, and success or failure depends on how knowledgeable of a rep you get. i would suggest you keep trying different avenues of contacting Sprint if you can't order the first time. hopefully, this situation improves as more people place orders

Update 2: for those who were able to place an order and received an email confirmation, you can check the status HERE. the order number provided in the email doesn't have dashes. be sure to put a dash btw the 4th and 5th character and another one btw the 5th and 6th character (like the second example), or else the system won't recognize it

Thanks for this. Luckily my local Sprint store is pretty helpful but is rather not have to take a trip as well

How difficult is it to install a sim card?

I just tried, got denied. The rep indicated that they don't have any support for the phone yet, and can't order a sim for it. Kept saying sprint phones will come with a sim (obviously from the sprint store/website they will). He had his team lead jump on the chat also, no dice.

I'll try again next week, once they've started seeing more requests. My n5 probably won't be here until around the 15th since I ordered late yesterday, so no real rush for me.

Never assume anything from a carrier is free. Check your next bill. Usually SIM kits cost between $10 (T-Mobile) and $25 (Verizon)

Are you sure you even need a sim to activate on sprint? I thought sprint only uses Sim's for international use?

yes, i'm sure. LTE networks require the use of UICCs (SIM cards) just like GSM. my Sprint HTC One came with a SIM.

in this case, you'll need a Sprint ICC since the phones shipped through the Play Store do not contain SIMs

Hmm, when i needed a SIM for a Sprint iPhone 5 sometime ago and went to a store they wanted to charge me $50. $50 for a dang SIM card. I wanted to turn into the Incredible Hulk and trash the place but instead laid out the cutest sob story in the world with a tear or two for dramatic effect and they gave me one for free.

Sprint keeps telling me they won't order the sim till they have the phones in stock. I asked why is that, isn't the micro sim they're providing with this phone the same as the micro sim they'd give with any of their android phones. He claimed it was different, this was a supervisor. Looks like i'll be having to go to a store to activate mine.

the sim card for sprint is just for lte use? for the S4 , you can still get 3g without the 4g lte sim in it. so wouldnt it be the same for this?

So once the sim is in place do I just call sprint and have them disable my S4 on my account and then add the Nexus 5? Or can I do this online?

The team lead that had been in my chat session with the support rep followed up in an email asking if I was satisfied with the support and resolution I got from the chat session. Obviously I wasn't, so I sent a reply that I was frustrated by being told by sprint and google that the play store model would activate on sprint, and the chat rep was telling me he couldn't help. He emailed back asking for my pin and shipping address, and which shipping option I wanted, and he'd get one out to me. So kudos to them following up and solving the issue.

I'm wondering if they got caught by surprise today, and didn't have a plan quite in place yet for the N5.

yep, just log into your account on sprint.com. there's an option to activate a new phone. the procedure will automatically deactivate your current one.

I'm confused, why are people hesitant about going into the sprint store to ask for a sim?

Do you all think we'll be able to activate before the 8th? I wasn't sure if having a sim card was enough or if Sprint is waiting till the 8th to activate them.

Might not be an issue for me because I ordered mine yesterday so I'm not quite site when I'm receive mine.

don't see why not. i'll confirm once i receive mine on the 7th.
