I Don't see what the issue is. It can't be that hard to make a Google app for the watch that tells you that you have email and then let you read at least some of it. Before the gear I had the Sony Smartwatch and it's apps ran circles around the Gears apps. I could read my email, text messages, Facebook status updates, Twitter posts, etc. Not to mention the game, productivity, and health apps that were available. I could reply to text messages and it's 2yrs old. I know it's early and more apps will follow sooner or later. When the Sony Smartwatch launched there was 2 to 3 times more apps available at launch including the most important ones like GMaik, Facebook, Twitter and other major brands. I'm upset that Samsung launched the gear with such a miniscule amount of apps. I use the watches so I don't have to pull my phone out every 5 minutes. I don't just want to know I have mail when the Gmail icon comes up. I want to be able to read it without pulling my phone out.
I'm an equal opportunity device owner. I just happen to love Samsung products.
