[Q] How is wi-fi tethered data vs phone only data handled?
Im on stock rom and rooted. I have Wi-fi tether app with the trevE mod. Now that Im no longer on unlimited data with Verizon I have to pay attention to my data usage. Ive been on 5gb plan since February, I use wi-fi when available, but since I travel I use my wi-fi tether to tether my laptop. I dont download big files, mainly browsing and watch some videos while tethered. Every month I have to cut back towards the end of the month as I get close to my limit allowed. Last few months I have tried to figure out exactly what is my most data usage on. When I know I have a trip coming up I try to save data to use on a trip. Last month I was at about 2gb in the last week of my cycle so I figured I had plenty of data to tether to my laptop. I was on for about 30minutes when I get an alert on my phone that I have exceeded 75% of my data usage. I thought this was strange as now way I could've used that much data in that amount of time. So kept on tethering for about another 10 minutes when I get another alert saying 90% of data use. In about 40 minutes I went through about 2.5gb of data! I did not download any files or stream any movies or music. I was on one website and watched 2 10 minute flash type videos (www.railsforzombies.org
) was what I was doing. The data usage info on the phone does not list wi-fi tether data as being used shows all other native apps that used data for the cycle. I would like to know how the wi-fi tether app or other wi fi tether apps handle data as opposed to how the phone on its own handles data for usage? How could I go through so much data being tethered in such a short time for only 2 videos essentially? Does Verizon do something to data usage if going through a tether app?
