First attempt on Odin looked like it went fine and "Passed" but it soft-bricked! Reran it a second time, doing nothing different and it passed again. This time it immediately went to the Boot screen and started normally. Success! I checked wifi, network and phone. They all work fine. Restarted in Download Mode and the Flash Counter reads zero! I then updated Superuser in the market and ran Root Explorer and TiBu and they each requested Superuser Access, as they should. Granted SU and Root Explorer runs in R/W mode now. That smells like complete Root Success to me! Woohoo! So nice to have root on day 6 of Note ownership!

Thanks again Mashi. Here's a little something for your hard work! 993722939K5886837
And Props to Capite and Blownco for hosting the file to get this moving.
So for any doubters, this works perfect. Roots the i-717, doesn't trigger the Flash Counter.

Dont believe its that easy unfontunatly. You probably would need to Odin back a stock system image... But with my Skyrocket I just used root explorer and deleted the SuperUser.apk from the Root and any other Root related apps and returned it and visually had no signs that it was rooted LOL.

The only thing about root explorer is that there is no free version of the app. You have to pay to download. It's a great app, but if you don't want to pay for it you can use adb to delete the files.

there are two free alternatives I use.

1) ES Explorer, under settings, enable root and enable r/w, then it basically works like root explorer.

2) SuperManager - same ****, enable root, and you can change system r/w stuff

also do we unzip the file? or just flash the zip (like CWM)
use PDA?

please advise

This is what worked for me:

1. Download mashi's file onto your desktop. Use 7zip and extract it.

1. download Odin 1.85 onto your PC and install it (actually you might not have to install it, just extract it and have it ready).
http://xdaforums.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=581913&d=1304094576

2. Download the drivers for your phone on the PC and install it. Then plug in your phone to make sure it works -- it seems to take a while to get everything working. If you get an error, try rebooting and try again. Also, try using the cable that came with your phone -- 3d party cables don't always seem to work. If it still doesn't work, try another USB port.
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SGH-I717ZBAATT

3. Turn off your phone and uplug it. Take the battery out of your phone, put it back in, and hold the volume down button and power button at the same time. Keep them held down until the phone starts buzzing and you see the Samsung name.

4. At this point you are either in download mode or the phone will tell you to hit volume up, at which point you'll be ready.

5. Run Odin on your PC -- right click and choose "Run as Administrator" just to be safe.

6. Plug your phone into your PC.

7. In the Odin screen, wait until one of the top boxes turns yellow and displays some numbers.

8. UNCHECK all the boxes except for Auto Reboot.

9. Hit the PDA button and navigate to mashi's file that you unzipped.

10. Hit start

11. wait until your phone reboots.

12. If it didn't work, try rebooting and starting from scratch.

13. Papashex says: verify super user app now present. Update super user app (optional).

I assume this will overwrite my Rogers ROM with AT&T ROM?

I am pretty sure the Rogers version is the international version of the phone and is completely different hardware than the AT&T version. I think it would be a mistake to try this on your phone. Like they said in Ghostbusters: 'It is very dangerous to cross the beams'.

Edited in: It seems there are people making cross kernels so I guess I could be wrong but I would be sure.

Your correct completely. Don't flash this "att_root.zip" file on anything but an Att Note. They have an large entire forum for the international versions of the Note.

The Canadian Note is not the international version, it's LTE and same design, specs as the AT&T version. But I'm not sure about the differences in the ROM, Kernal, etc.

The Rogers version is the same hardware as the AT&T phone. i717 vs i717R. The roms vary mainly in the carrier radio specs.and, of course...bloatware. An accidental flash of the other carrier's rom will usually load and not brick the phone, but, naturally all data and phone functions won't work.

I think you didn't get the whole thing, it shows "522,916 KB" in Windows Explorer.

Thanks Capite for the guide Post #87. Of course, thanks to OP for the share! and the one who shared using dropbox!

I think I'm rooted now. BTW, what are the advantages and disadvantages of this root over the one that adds flash counters?

Can you overclock your Gnote with this root? What other disadvantages you get with this root over DA_G's method?

Thanks

The advantage over the other root method is the lack of a counter being tripped. Also you don't have to wipe your data using this method as you do for the other method. You can overclock IF (big if!) You install the "overclock kernel" from DA_G, which then trips your counter so it really negates having used this method. The same goes for flashing the Custom ROM by TPC, trips the counter, BUT you get a custom debloated ROM that is gonna definitely offer better performance. It all depends on you and whether you're worried about voiding the warranty visibly really.

Thanks brittoking for the info. This is root method is more than enough for me!

By the way, since this question is related to this root method .. and searching the thread doesn't have any results.

Here it goes:

After rooting using this method, then lets say ... remove some bloatware and install only rooted capable apps. Then I decided I want to go back to Factory Settings and UNroot it (just like how it was out of the box).

Will Settings > Privacy > Factory data on Phone do the trick? (even unroot?)

Or do I have to do something special.

The reason I ask is I'm returning this note in exchange for another one in 2 hours. I need to unroot it and restore to defaults so my personal data will not be there when I return it. I also need the bloatware to be installed back to avoid suspicions of root.

Thanks again.

This one is difference than Da_G one. Da_G one is perm root but it will increase flash counter. This one flash with Odin but in system level not boot kernel

Well since no one else was either dumb enough to try this or I'm the only one who really doesn't want to trip a counter on a day old device....I went ahead and flashed this thru Odin! Btw....it works for those still reading this thread.

In case someone is anxious for this, here is a quick and dirty guide how to do it:

1.) Grab my stock system.img.ext4 from stock odin post
2.) Boot into a linux with ext4 support compiled into kernel and e2fsprogs installed
3.) Put the system.img.ext4 in your home folder
    (from your home folder)
    4.) sudo mkdir /mnt/system
    5.) sudo mount system.img.ext4 /mnt/system
6.) look in /mnt/system, here is the whole filesystem mounted as a folder. you can add/remove/change things at will from here, like adding su to /mnt/system/xbin, theme stuff, whatever. every change is preserved in the system.img.ext4.
7.) leave the /mnt/system folder so it's not in use
8.) df -h (note the size of /mnt/system in MB)
    9.) sudo umount /mnt/system
10.) sudo e2fsck system.img.ext4 (say yes to the prompt asking to create lost+found so it is marked clean)
11.) sudo resize2fs system.img.ext4 790M (this is assuming df -h read 785MB, I am leaving 5MB free space. You can make this any size up to 1GB which is the full system partition size)
12.) (optional) re-mount system.img.ext and delete lost+found folder, then umount it. Android doesn't require that folder, we just needed e2fsck to mark the filesystem clean before resize2fs resized it.
(you should now have a system.img.ext4 at the size you set in resize2fs step.)
    13.) tar cvpf pda-odin-system.tar system.img.ext4

That's it, you've cooked up a custom system.img.ext4 to be flashed by Odin to /system, this is my favorite way to mod a ROM :)

I will just pay the $12 for the 30 day pass and upload it to my dropbox account for everybody.
