[REF][GPE] Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition Stock OTA URLs

This thread is for owners of the Google Play Edition Galaxy S4 GT-I9505G to discuss OTA updates. It is NOT for discussion of how to convert an I9500/I9505/whatever variant to a Google Edition (which cannot be done anyway), discussions on how to get the GPE ROM onto other variants, or discussions on the various GPE-based custom ROMs for other variants. There are countless threads on XDA about these topics and that would be a more appropriate forum for discussing them. Thank you.

Hi Everyone,

As I do with many Nexus devices, I intend to maintain a thread here with links to all the stock OTA updates for the Galaxy S4 GT-I9505G (Google Play Edition). Each time there is an OTA update, its direct link on Google's servers will be posted here for reference and posterity. I also mirror these files at http://www.randomphantasmagoria.com/firmware/galaxy-s4/jgedlteue.

Any questions about flashing these OTA updates can be discussed and answered here as well.

I don't keep track of Touchwiz updates. I only track Google Experience stuff like Nexus devices and these Google Play Edition phones.

No. JLS36(X) is a device-specific branch for the Nexus 7 2013 LTE variant. JSS15(X) is device-specific to the Nexus 7 2013 WiFi-only variant. All other Nexus devices and the Google Play Edition phones are remaining with the main branch, which is JWR66(X). They did this until the N7 2013 code gets a bit more stable, as not to destabilize the other device trees.

I imagine we'll see all devices unified into a single tree starting with the KitKat launch.

So JLS36G will only be coming to the N7 LTE just like JSS15R only came to the N7 WiFi.

No, these OTAs will only work on a real I9505G phone. If you want to run the Google Experience ROM on an I9505, you can, but it's all custom ROMs. There's no way to do a 100% conversion of an I9505 to an I9505G.

That would be up to Samsung, not Google.

Well, I don't understand why... I mean, it's being sold to let the user have a "Google experience", which would involve him/her doing whatever they want with the device, be it formatting, flashing something and then wanting to go back to stock (like on the Nexus)

Why didn't Google take over Samsung since it's their OS?

Frankly I'm starting to think I did a big mistake to switch from my Galaxy Nexus to the I9505G...

Because the Google Play Editions aren't Nexus devices. The software on these phones come from Samsung. Google provides the actual ROM, but Samsung builds the kernels and, ultimately, is the one who release the updates. These phones have no support in AOSP at all. If these were Nexus devices or even got updates directly from Google, then yes, they would probably provide images. Since that isn't the case, I think our best hope is for SamMobile to provide ODIN-flashable firmware.

Actually I thought that since they are sold on the Play Store, images would be provided. That's the only way to make sure that if you make a mistake you can always go back to original and be sure that the original is actually "the original" without anything added or removed.
I really have started to think I've made a gigantic mistake buying this phone...

Make a nandroid backup of everything. That's the same thing. Just make sure you don't overwrite stock recovery before you do. Do fastboot boot customrecovery.img (to make sure it doesn't overwrite stock), then do a nandroid backup. There you go. You've got a stock image to fall back on.

Back in the days of the Nexus One and Nexus S, we didn't have factory images either. We had to rely on nandroid backups and people who made flashable ROMs out of system dumps. The Nexus S has factory images now, but they didn't show up until around Ice Cream Sandwich. So for most of that phone's lifecycle, we were out of luck.

I've done it already, but still, I think it isn't as "clean" as it could be... Further, when I update to a successive release what happens? I should make another nanadroid, right? But this time it'd be unclean since the apps are already installed... (Am I right?)
Further does the CWM nanadroid backup EVERYTHING? Or does it miss some partitions (for example, I cannot see a file named "radio" out of the CWM nanadroid) etc?

Wow, that's a long time... They put them when no one needed those images anymore...
How could I make a system dump without altering the phone, and how could I make it flashable?
In order to have clean (without applications, just as if were factory reset) images via system dump, would I have to format everything or there's a workarount?

I made a perfectly clean nandroid backup from my device because mine is stock and unrooted, completely untouched. I have the bootloader, radio, system, boot and recovery. I'll see about throwing it together as a flashable zip for everyone.

I used CWM and it's the latest one, JWR66Y/4.3. I won't be providing a Nandroid, though. I'll make an actual ZIP that you should be able to flash in CWM or any other custom recovery
