All root does is give you administrative access to your device. You can gain it by simply from looking at exploits in the stock rom itself (gingerbreak is an example that does this). Also since Android is based off of the Linux Kernel, getting root access involves a very similar process in getting admin permission on Linux itself. Pretty much you're hacking the device.
