Don't forget that (dynamic) compression degrades the sound quality to make it louder, most of the mordern music is now compressed a lot already.
If you guys wanna listen to "synthetic sounds" with no variations that's fine, if you want to loose some percent of your ears because of a "tiny better bass" that's still fine,
but you're warned now :)

I COMPLETELY AGREE TO THIS.....but some of us love it when the sound is bit more on the bass..and frankly the stock sound lack bass punch a bit....am sure most of us will sacrifice a bit of mid and high for a bit more of low punch:p

Compression and EQ are different, I guess Bass boost is a multi-band compressor that browse for low hz between 30 and 100hz, because compressing reduces dynamics for Db level, EQ (most of bands EQ actually) only increase Db over a band (frequency range) and therefore gives distortion.
Low frequency needs more "power" physicly to sound at same "level" than the rest (higher) frequencies.

Everyone knows (at least those recording things on computers) low frequencies WILL definitively need compression, mixing it well with the song is one of the goal (finding the better match like pc speakers => low volume = less bass than rest || high volume = fat boom boom)
low frequencies always are mono AND compressed and the more the decades goes, the more CDs get -over-compressed in studios (if you're interressed in sociology and ethno-musicology, there's a "war of sound" thesis explaining the "fight to sound fat and big" which is really entertaining (pm me for the link))

Hence you get the thing, you should get the fact it's neither good or bad, it's a matter of perception, people don't have all developped their ears to ear this kind of details (lambda people listening to radio f-e).

Well-used compression is powerful, it really "transmit" the energy/feelings the band gave while recording.
Bad usage could be what you could observe when listening to jazz on 240p (thanks youtube!) just browse for some Louis Armstrong, listen it to the highest quality at good volume, then take a shot at switching to 240p.
In the 50/60's, studios weren't all about "sounding loud" and therefore weren't using much compressors (on voices / instruments / etc...), listening to such vynils or well-mastered CDs is pure beauty but you'll have to turn that volume UP!
That organic un-compressed sound ended up on Youtube and got encoded many times (ie. original uploaded => encoding to 1080p <---> 240p) and you can cleary hear the differences on tones Armstrong has, singing and playing trumpet...
Youtube's encoding process has compressed and reduced quality, It's like singing in a shoebox, while there might be people liking shoebox singers, I'd better like Armstrong's voice IRL singing in my hears.

My 2 cents, My 2 ears :p

I know this keep the topic alive, tho we should focus on stability / performance / bug fixes, hence we could get fancy with profiles and stuff.
Furthermore, you've been into layouts a bit, I'd better see you resizing things than merging stuff :p

I'm sorry to say, but I don't agree with this. I see my phone as something that has to be as nifty as possible, with a perfect balance between performance, handyness and eye candy. When looking in gerrit, I always seek things that improve one factor without endangering others. I like the screen-off animation -> I merge it. I switch lots between profiles -> I merge it. I'm always very aware on possible problems and/or performance issues, and always keep an eye on the comments on gerrit. But if the experimental merge doens't cause a problem and I like it as it is, I will keep it. Most of the merges I pick, doesn't force you to use it (I can only remember the linaro toolchain as a obligatory cherry-pick). So if you don't like it, you can simply not use it or give me a reason why I should not keep it in future builds, I will be always prepared to listen.

I started building CM9 for myself and, allow me to be very honest, I still do it primarily for myself. But I am extremely happy that I can contribute to this community and the joy of you all by sharing it. That is the reason why I try to make as much updates as possible to share with you all. However, my main reason for trying to make better builds, will never be to please as much people as possible, to get as many thanks as possible or "to keep the toppic alive". I only do it because I want to get a better and more usefull phone.
I must admit, "keeping the toppic alive" allows others to get interested in it as well, and thus deliver fixes that I would never could have developed/found. I'm very grateful for that, but still, if you don't like the few changes & merges I make "for myself", then someone else has to start building and sharing with you all; I'd be happy to pass the torch to someone else and make my own "personalized" builds, base on the sub-official one.

I can understand why you don't like me seeing merging things that you don't like/don't want/are not interested in. And that you would like to see me fix things, like resizement, that makes us all happy. But let us be honest, new options are way more exciting than spending hours on difficult and cumbersome resizements, so I don't think you can blame me for trying them out :p

As always, no pressure on you (or anybody!) on fixing things, enjoy the football spectacle instead!

PS: Although the solution was in the end located somewhere else, if it wasn't for my interest in the profile toggle, I wouldn't have found how to get the torch toggle working.

EDIT:
Forgive me if I sound ungrateful, that is not my intention: I'm very happy with every solution that anybody reaches for getting this ROM better and better.

Sure, I can only agree on this one, our phones should be making coffee, I'm only pointing the fact that you're merging commits that are tiny, sure to be merged (really) soon and that's adding a "part of work" from you that you could put aside doing something else. I'm not judging you in anyway, I'm just trying to put a direction into all this (and you've stated right, you wouldn't figure as fast how to solve things that doesn't serve you)

If we have a stable base, most of the hardware working to be a daily driver, apps that are essentials and part of using 100% of our phone (like FM app or camera; etc ;)) then I would pick "finitions" not to be dependant of CM gerrit. Remaining work is tiny, that's what my point is based on (not including Camera half working and Encoder/decoder not working (along with youtube HQ problem) that are actually not fixable because it seems we lack OpenMax driver for Armv6 on ICS)

The all point of their organisation (ie. gerrit and reviewing and so on) is to make maintainers working on their device to be working, and have developpers working on "generic codes" that will be merged once it's reviewed stable and done the right way.
I get the fact you're happy helping people while you did this for yourself, who's not being grateful to see an ICS rom for our wildfire ? Don't get me wrong, I'm only speaking in term of a simili "roadmap", I'm arguing on HOW to do it, not WHY or FOR WHO, and I've already thought of making a separate thread to post "pure" CM9, there's simply no point at doing so and you're managing it just fine...

Long explication short, I'm not asking you to say "yes" everytime I speak (and that's not my point) but if I'm helping you, you'll have to take in consideration that this is a project (people expects things from this, it needs a direction), that I'm not speaking "personnally" and attacking you on what you're doing. You've finished studies and did a thesis, I guess you know as much as I know, working with people needs organisation, and it's always a better way to oppose two ideas better than being "scared" of speaking, the fact being ideas can be discuted and worked out.

Still no pressure, I've been waiting patiently to have enough motivation, so you should do if you're asked for something to do.
I'm mostly only using my phone for texts and calls, if I only had to fix what serves me then I'll get my 3310 out of the closet :p
Just kidding, hopes you've got my point and we're still good ;)

So true, digital music these days sucks unless you really know what to do with it, doesn't matter how much you up the frequencies, doing that only distorts the true sound which will most likely have been made on a straight level to sound as clear as possible on all formats or as mentioned by symp compressed heavily resulting in lower quality sound.

Bring back vinyl is all I can say on the matter, ive been dj'ing for the last 13 years hence the name scratch and would happily walk around with my record bag and one of my 1210's if I could.

Updates worth mentioning regarding the Wildfire
  • Torch toggle from the notification aria is enabled
  • Lockscreen background customization is safe and working
  • Muting in a phone call should be enabled now (thanks to Sam3087)
  • Added experimental profile toggle (here and here)
  • Untill stated otherwise, the new builds won't have the Linaro toolchain anymore, as it is reported to break too much things. However, all the speed optimizations from Linaro are still present
Erwin

Way to go Erwin. Thanks for taking muting issue into consideration. Big thanks for that. Also i do find a splendid speed difference between this build and probably a month back. I can say that its almost 5 times faster.
Thank you for the time that you spend in these builds. :good:

Can't you zipdev your own rom. It'd be personalized and you could claim your a dev by opening something up and installing a few apks.

I get your point, and I will keep it surely in mind. You are right that people are now having expectations on this, and I promise to keep that in mind as well, perhaps even more than I'm doing now. Especially if we want to keep this a collaborative project, and no personal KANG.
But just a little bit to my defense, the profile toggle commit had died a little bit on gerrit, without an obvious reason. So in stead of waiting for it to merge (like I'm doing now with the increasing call volume feature), I decided to merge it myself and check it out, as I would love to see it merged. I cannot promise you that I will wait every time, but again, I will do my best to show patience and surely to not merge anything that hinders the overall usability/performance of the ROM. But cherry-picking, well, I just love to check out new features, so it is difficult to hold in :p

Oh well, let us leave it behind us.
Something else: I have the notion that the call screen doesn't lag that much anymore? Where I previously missed my calls due to the lag, the screen is now visible when I get it out of my pocket!

EDIT:

Erwin p could you make two diferent build when the rom wil be finish, one final build ( i hope with all working). And one personilisation build with all the tweaks you add ?
I won't. First, that would take too much organisational power of me, and at the end all will be messed up. Secondly, my personal addons are minimal and not worth a second build. At the moment, only the profile toggle is from personal flavour. And the Linaro optimizations, but I don't think anyone wants to get rid of those :p

is it still safe to use 200mb partition on system for the new update?
That is still my partition size (using the tiny gapps).

well wifi tethering consumes a lot of battery and makes the phone shoot up its temp to 45-48*c :p

so i prefer not using it....

usb tethering will be a great treat...if anyone can figure it out to fix it please:rolleyes:
Thanks ErwinP and all the developers for this continuous support and as a result of which we get what we haven't thought we'll get when ICS first released.

@djpry: I had been using USB tethering since the beginning of this ICS thread. Also, I didn't found anyone complaining of that either. But since no one had replied to your query. I thought to write the resolution (I am writing this with internet being provided by my wildy connected through USB.)

Provided you have installed all the drivers, go to terminal and write this:
su - for super user access then
ifconfig<space>usb0<space>0.0.0.0

Now, enable data and connect your wildy and you will get the USB tethering working..

Hit thanks if I have helped.

Lol no it's because erwin p say he make this rom for him at the base and so he make personalisation.

Sent from my HTC Wildfire using xda premium

CM sources :
-1- official branch (what is merged is official)
-2- custom CM9 with un-merged-yet stuff unofficially merged

This rom is type 2; all relative tweaks done to our device is the "only" way to go.
Erasing them to do seperate builds will only releave in people downloading the "tweaked" one

PS: referring to "tweaks" as tweaks in system.prop or build.prop, it is not to be mistaken from what can be commited to ErwinPs github.

PS2: the only tweaks I would pull apart and/or modify and/or do otherwise are those init.d's I did not really cared about since now, definitively needs cleanup.

    Hello you all,

Here's a non-official CyanogenMod 9 beta ROM which is almost fully working on our wildfire.
/!\ WARNING /!\ this ROM is currently BETA. Important things work, there are still things that doesn't work and the device is suffering slow-downs
If you can't stand that, make sure you have a nandroid backup to revert to after 'test'.

    Please read this first:
    • I am absolutely no developer. I just learnt how to compile from source, and all that I'm presenting here is the result of the big efforts from the CM9 team in general, and Arco68's more specific - the CM guru for our device.
    • I cannot be taken responsible for anything regarding this ROM: if it suddenly bootloops, if it looks bad, if certain things don't work or stop working or if your devices tries to bite you mother-in-law and messes up the hair of your fiancée just the day before your wedding - it can be my fault, but it is your own responsibility. So don't come complaining that I screwed up your wedding party - you shouldn't have been occupied with your phone the day before your wedding in the first place.
    • I greatly encourage everybody to help to make this ROM better. Not only because this ROM has some great potential, but most because it is fun to do (and very addictive, be careful!) and you learn A LOT from it. So If you have find a fix of any kind, post it here and send me a pm so I can update the OP with your contribution. But please: say exactly what you did! This is an open source project and nothing is more frustrating than seeing that a specific problem has occurred on another device as well, and then noticing that people "just fixed it, yeah baby". If you are new to all this building headaches - don't use this thread to start learning how to work with git and github, but personally I don't have no single problem with more advanced questions in which the effort that you have already tried to fix it, can be seen.
    • I won't be posting changelogs - they are way to much changes to keep track on the ones that effect the wildfire. For recent merged changes, I refer to the gerrit.
    • Do not complain, but enjoy both the fact that we can run ICS on our low-end device.

    This being said: download time!
    • New build from 2013.01.01: download.
    • Custom google apps (no faceunlock stuff, no GalleryGoogle.apk, only non-neon libs => smallest footprint (something like ~4mb)):click and press ctrl-S (Thanks to Sympnotic for making it)
      • latest "official" gapps :download (goo-inside.me)
    • MTD partion size
      • With tiny gapps, /system takes 181 mb -> I use 200 mb to be confortable
      • With tiny gapps /cache takes 1.2 mb

Updates worth mentioning regarding the Wildfire
    • General updates. Please note that there are almost no updates, as the CM team is focussing now on CM10.1.
    • Ported the libstagefright changes for the msm7x27 to match the new OMX IL libraries. I however do not think that it works...
    • Ported some Trebuchet features from cm-10.1. This is still a work in progress, and I don't know to what extend I will succeed with this.
      • Fix NPE when rotating
      • Remove wallpaper offset
      • Only mark preferences changed when they actually are changed
      • Fix for NPE in showAllAppsCling
      • Fix desktop alignment when Search Bar is hidden
      • LauncherModel: Fix possible NPE
      • Wallpaper Hack
        • This doesn't work good yet! In fact, it gives a very interesting phenotype: when you select this, you will not see the homescreen dock anymore (so the buttons for launching the app drawer, ... that are on the bottom of the screen). However, you can still click on them, as if they were there. So you don't see them, but they are there ;)
      • Workspace: Update wallpaper offsets to match hack for recent apps window

    Not (properly) working
    • Wallpaper hack
    • Do not set Launcher Drawer's scrolling Transition effect to "Tablet". It reboots your device every time you open the Launcher (thanks to musicazx)
    • Camera panoramic view
    • The flashlight option on your camera. It does however work in the camcorder (the native one and Camcorder Illusion)
    • Playing youtube video's in HD quality (without HD it goes fine)
    • Gallery (use QuickPic as a good alternative)
    • Voice-to-text: read this
    • Data usage is working well, but the "general" graph is showing all blue.

Stuff that works but need resizement
    • Apollo - but only a bit.

    Tips and tricks
    • Best Overclock settings are between 691 and 768 MHz w/o problems. SMARTASSV2 is the best compromise between performance and battery life.
    • Tip from Onisciente: If we turn off (Settings > Trebuchet > Applications settings > Widgets : Join with apps. App drawer will be faster; it won't display widgets in App drawer list, "widgets"
    • If you find Trebuchet Launcher slow, there are some alternative launchers. Nova Launcher is one of them, Apex Launcher & LauncherPro work great
    • FM radio : should be fixed but for now, use Spirit Free FM (Spirit Free FM thread):
      • Allow it to have superuser rights
      • Go to settings - audio - method and select msm7x30
    • When playing a youtube video, make sure that you disable HD, or it will not play well. You can do that by clicking on the red HD icon at the left of the video. If the icon isn't red anymore, HD is disabled.
    • Google VoiceSearch: read this.
    • WinSuk's script for trackball button wake-up is included. To enable/disable it: open terminal emulator, type 'trackballwake', allow superuser rights, wait for the message of success and reboot. ALL credits for this script goes to WinSuk!

    Credits goes to
    • the whole CyanogenMod team
    • Arco68
And people working on this rom :
    • Sympnotic
    • Rallapag
    • plakiko

    Have fun with it!

    New build 07.23

    Hello y'all

As some of you have seen perhaps, my LCD screen got broke (in fact, I broke it to repair my power button, long story :p). So now I'm waiting for a new screen, but as I'm leaving tomorrow on an other vacation, I'm not able to test the things I build. So this is why I only announce a new build here, and I do not update the OP. If I notitice by the replies that this build is oke, I will update the OP (if I have time left).

The build here doesn't contain any significant changes related to the buzz. As compared to the build in the OP, Contacts and Phone are resized (thanks to Rallapag) and the two lines that are reported to break the radio and 3G connection, are deleted. Remember, if you suffered from reboots, don't forget to reflash your radio as it is said that it is damaged by the previous builds.

Last, I don't think that the build itself contains that much great updates (apart from the "increase ringtone" option, perhaps). This is due to the fact that the CM team is now focussing on CM10. I'm planning to throw myself on it as soon as I'm back and have repaired my phone, and looking at Sympnotics github, it seems that he is thinking the same. But as always, don't ask for any ETAs and don't put up too much hope..

This is all, nothing left to say exept for the download link: click (md5sum: ef71ba68e29dcc5429b6f556546e61b2). Remember: I haven't tested this build yet!!

    All the best

I think this will make some of you very happŷ ;)

New build from 2012.09.17: download (md5sum: 28ca98179cab476c8e4857bda7c5f80b) - rapidshare mirror - github mirror.

Updates worth mentioning regarding the Wildfire
    • General updates. Please note that there are not that much updates, as the CM team is focussing now on CM10.
    • OTA Update Center: update to RC7
    • Trackball button fixed!! Also in the camera app!
    • Added WinSuk's script for trackball button wake-up. To enable/disable it: open terminal emulator, type 'trackballwake', allow superuser rights, wait for the message of success and reboot. ALL credits for this script goes to WinSuk!

    Trackball - Erwin: 37 - 1, but still I've won ;)

    Best regards,

New update available, check it out!

In this build, the camera is working! BUT I am not your god, perhaps only your hero. Why so: BECAUSE I HAVEN'T CODED ANYTHING! I just have found the right combination of patches to use. So credits for this go ONLY to stritfajt and Tanguy Pruvot.

I've added the libary from stritfajt manually to the zip file - this is the reason why you don't get an md5sum for this build. I will make sure that in a next build, this will be properly done and you will get an md5sum.

    What does work: taking pictures
What doesn't work: recording, panoramic view and the flashlight

To take photo's with your camera:
    • Open de camera app
    • press on the settings button
    • Press on those three squares to open more settings
    • swich on the second option: On/Off-button...
    • go back to the main screen
    • to take a photo, LONG-press the power button. A square appears wich you can use to aim with. When releasing the power button, the photo will be taken.

    Best regards
    Erwin
