(Optional reading. Rant.) Huge problem with CM9 and FaultException.

Back in October I decided to finally take the plunge and root my 2 Vibrants.
Mostly because I could, but also because Froyo was made my phone a laggy POS.
First ROM I tried was Cyanogen's and let's just say it wasn't quite there yet.
So off I went and tried what feels like every ROM that these fantastic Devs could cook up.
Every ROM I tried had its issues and every once in a while I would check in on CM again.
There was always something that prevented me from staying.
Things would get fixed but in the process things would also get broken.
Then they dropped the Vibrant all together and I stopped checking in.
Still, these last few months have been absolute geeky fun for me.
TeamWhiskey almost got it perfect with Bionix NextGen V2
Then they disappeared.
Luckily, right after Christmas along came Ice Cream Sandwich.
It's been Christmas all over again every night since then.
Practically not a day has gone by that I haven't looked to these and other forums to see what's new and improved.
A day without flash is like a year without rain, (to paraphrase Selena Gomez).
My wife thinks there is something wrong with me and gets irritated at the very mention of the word "ROM".

I have looked forward to every update and appreciate the hard work and countless hours the Devs have put in trying to make the Vibrant actually be Vibrant.

Thing is, it seems CM9 and FaultException are out to ruin my nightly flashing fun. (Admittedly, that sounds weird on many levels:eek:)
How dare you turn my Samsung Pig's Ear into a Silk Purse.
I mean WTF, a ROM that works right on a Vibrant?
C'mon, where's the fun in that?
I installed this on my wife's phone and now it stays on. All the time. Never just shuts off at random and without warning.
She has not come to me in days for me to "fix this damn thing".
Again what fun is that?
I had finally succeeded in getting her to hit Mute/Unmute on EVERY call as a matter of course.
An ICS ROM with GPS, no Mute/Unmute issues and can be used to call 911?
When she would get into trouble in the past she would just call me.
Now she can call the 911 for help?
They can hear her?
They can tell where she is because of the working GPS?
I used to be her hero.
The perfect man, handsome, smart and the only one who could hear her on her phone most of the time.

If I wanted an Iphone I would also have an apple compu8)*&*(^@_~^&$%#
(Sry about that, Windows crashed. Had to reboot.)

As I was saying, looking forward to bug fixes and the promise that each new revision might bring has become a part of my life and has given me a hard to understand amount of enjoyment.
I just don't want that to go away...
Did you have to fix everything at once?!
Where's your compassion guys?
Couldn't you have weened us off little by little?

What's a flashaholic to do now?:confused:

I'm still discovering some of the setting, but I like it.

For the most part I liked it. But after a while things started getting weird. Notifications would be blurred and I would have to reboot to get the status bar back to normal. My suggestion is hold off until the kinks get worked out a little more than

LMAO

That was good, real good... It will only get better the rest of the year I bet. Now I see why the manufacturers do not keep supporting these phones as they would surely go out of business if they kept giving us ROM updates like these Devs do. Will this be the first device I keep longer than two Years??? Lol it's looking more and more likely...

Soon this Android should be taking out the trash and feeding the cats... Hahahaha

I'm on 4/4 and I swear my wifi has gone in the ****ter (not always, but far to often). I'm hoping it is just that nightly and the next one will improve it since I rarely use 3g.

New nightly (4/04) finally gave me a GPS lock; it's fast and accurate too.

Sorry for no screenshots. I tried, but xda app won't let me upload images that aren't JPEG (ICS screenshots are PNG I think).

Side note: While I was typing this, the vibration on my phone got considerably weaker. Weird....

So.. I would like to preface this by saying this is very much an observation not a complaint! But so far my battery life has been solid but unspectacular.. 15 hours or so with fairly light use. I haven't really had a heavy use day to baseline. But I noticed today glancing through the battery stats that for a several hour period my phone was 'Awake' Ran CPU Spy for about 30 minutes and confirmed the phone was in fact not going into deep sleep. Battery stats showed Android System being 36% of my use.. far higher than anything, including screen. So I ran System Panel monitor for about 25 minutes, which confirmed 10% CPU usage with screen off.. but no fingering what app did it. So my conclusion is something ran away in my system that caused this.

So.. like most custom ROM's a simple reboot fixed this and it is happily deep sleeping again. But the nature of my job is such that I might not look at my phone for hours at a time. When these things happen in those circumstances it can kill the battery awfully fast. So I was just curious if anyone else had seen this at all or had any guesses as to what system process might be causing such a drain.

thanks,
cale

Install BetterBatteryStats to see what process is causing the partial wake locks. On the last 2 ROMs I've used (ever since Froyo) it has been GPS, usually called on by Facebook.

Can you please clarify the gapps part.
You flash cm9, then gapps and then allow the phone to boot into cm9 and then reboot to recovery and factory reset before allowing the phone to boot and sit for 7 minutes before a reboot?
Or did you mean after flashing gapps, do a factory reset whilst still in recovery, and then allow phone to boot into cm9 and wait 7 minutes before a normal reboot?

Globe after the full wipe, flash cm9, let it install and complete, factory reset,flash gapps 3/17 immediately after completion of rom install

Cheers Doug!
You think this is better than latest slim?
I was thinking about going back to froyo (fishman getting great reviews), as ICS builds are hit and miss. But of course, that means old Odin........ PITA!

I lol'd. She might still want to call you, as I've had two reports of 911 weirdness (links in OP), and one report of it working first time. I also must say I contacted the Glitch guys to see how to get GPS going on ICS, and the new GPS changes are from YAGF2.

Sorry guys, forgot to start the 4/5 nightly earlier. It's cooking now. Should be up on get.cm in an hour or an hour and a half.

GPS works good without the stock kernel. With stock after deep sleep GPS breaks. With Subzero works after deep sleep and works good.

    Please note that there may be intermittent emergency dialing issues and/or GPS/AGPS issues (including GPS daemon crashing, which does not restart) which could hinder location of you in an emergency.

    CyanogenMod is a free, community built, aftermarket firmware distribution of Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich), which is designed to increase performance and reliability over stock Android for your device.

    Code:
    #include <std/disclaimer.h>
    /*
     * I am not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards, thermonuclear
     * war, or the current economic crisis caused by you following these
     * directions. YOU are choosing to make these modificiations, and
     * if you point your finger at me for messing up your device, I will
     * laugh at you.
     */

    This thread is for the development of CyanogenMod 9 nightlies for the Samsung Vibrant (aka SGH-T959), the Galaxy S 4G / Vibrant 4G (SGH-T959V) is not supported here. Nightlies are built each night with the very latest code, for this reason, they are extremely experimental and should be avoided by beginners and people who have important responsibilities tied to the usage of their phone.

    CyanogenMod is based on the Android Open Source Project with extra contributions from many people within the Android community. It can be used without any need to have any Google application installed. Linked below is a package that has come from another Android project that restore the Google parts. CyanogenMod does still include various hardware-specific code, which is also slowly being open-sourced anyway.

    All the source code for CyanogenMod is available in the CyanogenMod Github repo. And if you would like to contribute to CyanogenMod, please visit out Gerrit Code Review.

    A: Yes.

    Q: I keep getting "Installation Aborted" error 7
    A: Install the Glitch kernel and retry.

    A: http://changelog.bbqdroid.org/#vibrantmtd/cm9/latest

    Q: When will the Linaro tweaks be merged?
    A: Don't know.

    [font=Calibri,Arial]How to Build[/font]
    First initialize your build environment.

    Now follow the "installing repo" section in this guide:
    http://source.android.com/source/downloading.html

    Now downloading CyanogenMod source:
    Code:
    mkdir ~/Desktop/CM9
    cd ~/Desktop/CM9
    repo init -u http://github.com/CyanogenMod/android.git
    repo sync -j24

    More setup:
    Code:
    . build/envsetup.sh
    breakfast cm_vibrantmtd-userdebug

    Getting proprietary files:
    You must have a copy of CM9 for the Vibrant running on your phone for this part.
    Code:
    ( cd device/samsung/vibrantmtd && ./extract-files.sh )

    Compiling:
    Code:
    mka bacon
    9
    911

    Ok so here is my 911 experience. I live in Denver by the way, and I just emailed the 911 operations manager about doing a test call. She said that is fine just please do it between 8:30 and 11:30 as that is their lowest call volume.

    So the first time I called it clicked, hung up and disabled my entire cell signal. No signal no data nothing. So I rebooted my phone, and google voice informed me I had 2 missed calls from the Denver PD. I tried again and it worked perfectly. I explained I was testing a piece of software, the woman was very friendly said that was no problem and they wouldn't send anyone out. She also confirmed that all the E911 info came up properly on her screen.

    So I'm not sure what to make of this exactly. One time it did nothing though at least my number got through. The other time it worked great. I mean the first time could have been a glitch entirely unrelated to CM. Hard to say. It leaves me ambigious though. If I have a real emergency I really don't want to wait for the phone to reboot!

    Oh and per my previous message of issues with Exchange.. turned out my work Exchange server was down. Working great now!
