I want to buy you a cup of coffee! So many of us understand the need to root but some of us with lack of education, we gratefully appreciate the helping hand from people like you. Thank you Sir I am finally rooted.

Phone: Droid 3
System: 5.7.906
Other: XT862- Verizon

May 29, 2012 - An update to the verizon system unrooted me. I tried to re-root using petes tools, and a 1 click script, both of which failed on step 2.

I found the portable Motofail.exe today (June 3, 2012) and can verify it works on .906 on the Droid 3 on verizon.

Thanks so much for the hard work! <3

Enable USB Debugging on phone. Unplug, then plug back in, right-click on motofail.exe then select "Run as administrator"

I run this as administrator on my verizon d3, it goes through all steps, says "exploit complete" and "press any key to continue". The phone also did not reboot. I have the correct drivers installed, usb debugging check and I'm running as admin. But it looks like nothing happened to the phone, no super user or root access. What am I missing?

I want to confirm this too. Manually updated to the 906 release from stock recovery (phone had never been rooted or altered in any way), installed the most up to date Motorola drivers, ran this EXE and the phone is rooted. No drama at all.

And this was after I tried to use Pete's 1.07 one click tool and it failed at step two (failed because it doesn't support 906 yet).

Very slick, thanks for the help!!

I have updated the original post, making it more comprehensive.

A portable version of the ICS rooter was added, as well as a link to the latest Motorola USB drivers if needed.

Remember, you must have three things for this to work:
1. Your must have USB Debugging enabled on your phone.
2. The latest Motorola drivers installed in Windows (make sure there are no hardware errors in Windows Device Manager after plugging in your phone)
3. The right rooter (i.e. don't use the ICS one if you are rooting GB)

Can't Root Droid RAZR MAXX

I am running 6.12.181.XT912.Verizon.en.US which someone posted earlier was successfully rooted by this portable motofail. I have USB Debugging enabled

When I tried to install the latest Motorola drivers on my PC, my system said I already had more recent drivers installed. I am running Windows 7 64-bit.

motofail appears to work until at the end:

Attempting persistence...
* daemon not running. starting it now *
adb server is out of date. killing...
* daemon started successfully *
adb server is out of date. killing...
* daemon started successfully *
Cleaning up...
Rebooting...
Exploit complete!

Can someone point out where I am going wrong?

Not only am I a noob, but this is my first smart phone. Be gentle, I'm old...

I am answering my own post (sorta).

While the problem I just posted still exists, it is now moot to me as I have managed to root my phone using SuperOneClick v2.3.3.0 with the motofail exploit.

Still old, but feeling a wee bit smarter. :D

...obviously no root happening. I also tried the latest Superoneclick 2.3.3 and put the motofail file in the exploits folder and still it will not root. That way crashes much faster. I have disabled my firewall, etc, virus program everything. I am at a loss for ideas.. any from you??

Try a different usb port

If that does not work then try a different computer

If that still does not work then re-stock your phone (FXZ/update to .906) and try again before installing any of your apps or synchronizing your accounts.

Glad I could help. You probably had old drivers left behind in Device Manager. That's why I always tell people to install the latest Motorola drivers BEFORE plugging in the phone. :)

For convenience sake, I have compiled the Motofail rooter into a single exe file (for use on builds with a GB-based kernel). I have also compiled the ICS root exploit into a single exe file as well (for builds based on a true ICS kernel). No code has been changed, and all credit goes to Dan Rosenberg (@djrbliss).

    • Universal Gingerbread (GB) Rooter: Download HERE (virus free)

    • Universal Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) Rooter: Download HERE (virus free)

These rooters have been tested and working on Droid 3, Droid Bionic, Droid RAZR, Droid 4, even on the latest ROM releases like the 5.9.905 for the Bionic and the official/cheesecake ICS leaks. Please make sure you use the right rooter, one is for GB and the other is for ICS. These will work on the official OTA releases as well as any custom ROMs.

If needed, the latest Motorola USB PC drivers can be downloaded here:

wow ok i thought this was self explainatory run .batch file i guess people have never used a one click root exploit wouldn't know but this was by far the easiest root method other than odin of coarse

A lot of people find this website when they want to do something specific with their phone. The majority of them do not know what a batch file is. The devs on here have a lot of good information but spit it out at a high level, expecting people to just "know" a ton of information right off the .bat (pun intended)

I am simply trying to bridge the gap, as you can probably infer from my practical/layman-term tutorials.

So I'm almost ready to use this but I do need to know if there is a way to unroot back to stock on the .902 root.

    not sure what you mean.

If your saying is there a way to unroot .902 then Yes.

How is this diffenent that motofail ?? Wild guess we can actually one click from our phone ??or what

No, this is nothing more than the standard motofail, it is just compiled into a single EXE file now. I created it because I had people asking me how to use Motofail. One guy asked me what file he runs, or if he copies the files into his sytem of his phone **yikes**, so I made this just for convenience sake (it only runs on Windows, so it should be pretty clear).
