[Q] Is a SIM card required to update firmware?

I have a rezound that I am using as my main phone but the bionic is still very useful without cdma/lte connectivity. As such I don't have a sim card installed.

I've tried updating to the 905 firmware using the ota downloaded via wifi. The update has failed every time I have tried. I have tried the internal / external storage locations as default with no success.

I thought I could just boot into clockwork recovery and install but can't find the update file.

Is the update failing due to an absent sim card?

There is a lot I like about the bionic but this is beginning to remind me why I switched to the rezound.

Yes, the phone has to be active to update ota. It wont work on wifi.
