So in fact, you are using the Exposure Compensation as a light meter indicator - you're not changing it, you're *reading* it to see when your exposure is correct ?

This does indeed not work on all cameras - actually it only works on very few. As far as I know, the camera doesn't send this (very useful) information to the program at all, so there's no way to display it.

It must send it somehow because it shows the meter centerline in a different position in the screenshots.

thank you for having responded so quickly.
my question is not really about the hardware.
I just want to know if your application also works on a small phone screen of 3.5 inch?
(because I want to make a small multicam with 3 or 4 camera :))

If the rest of the device is compatible, I don't see why the 3.5" screen would be a problem.

Hi Purchased your app today and it is great. I use a Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 500d. I did notice today that the focus and metering boxes seam to be restricted in location on the screen. I cannot move the boxes to the full top of screen or full left of screen. Is there a fix for this in the making.

The camera restricts this, not the app.

It must send it somehow because it shows the meter centerline in a different position in the screenshots.

Yes, unless you misread the screenshot, or the screenshot is from a different camera than yours that does send the information.

recently I´ve downloaded DSLR Controller, as Google Play said to me, that the app is compatible with my phone. I found, that my 5d mk2 is also compatible, but after installing the app and connecting the cables, it doesn´t recognize the camera :(. Is the problem in my phone or? I tried to use different cables, but without success. Thanx!

Might help to know what phone you have.... what kind of cables are you using to connect, etc. People are willing to help, but it is impossible without you providing more details. I can just go out on a limb and say that it is probably your phone/rom/cable... too many variables.

thanx for your answer. if U look closer to my question - the name of the phone is there, at the title. It is Huawei u8860. And the cables - I used exactly this brand new one:
" 00078426 Hama USB 2.0 Adapter Cable, micro B-plug - A-socket "

together with some cables which came with my Canon & Nikon DSLR cameras. Thanx

I have tried Helicon remote which does not appear to have this limitation. Face detect is also offset to the right and down.

I am using the xda app, and see no titles... sorry bout that.
Anyways, you certainly need an OTG cable, not just an adapter.

So I'm at my wits end here and I'm wondering if anybody can help me out. I cant get either my 7d or my 1d mk IV to detect on my tablet or phone. I am using a Samsung Tab 2 10.1 and a Galaxy SII phone. I've tried five different cables, three different connectors, two different cameras, two devices and a few different apps and absolutely nothing will detect my cameras. Am I missing something here? I know the connectors work because they talk to my desktop and will read thumb drives / sdhc cards. I know the cords work because my cameras will talk to my computer just fine. I've tried every variation of connecting and powering on, the cameras are definitely awake, etc.

I've read through some of this giant thread but all I've seen is this Canon/Samsung combo either works perfectly right out of the box or it doesnt work at all and I can't seem to find any solutions for the "doesnt work" part anywhere. Are there Samsung firmware updates or drivers I need to install? I'd really love to use this app I hastily purchased or, failing that, just be able to dump photos directly via cable without having to pull my CF card and plug it into a USB card reader (which works, btw. Camera won't connect but card reader will. Why? Who knows!). Ugh, half the reason I bought this tablet was to hopefully use it with my photography. Very frustrating. Is there anything else I can try?

Have you tried the "USB Host Diagnostics" app to see what that says about your device's capabilities ?

I have tried Helicon remote which does not appear to have this limitation. Face detect is also offset to the right and down.

I'm not sure about the face detection, but the Helicon remote app certainly does have the exact same focus area limitation. Turn on the LCD screen on the back of your camera and try to focus as closely to the edge of the picture as possible - you'll get the exact same spot whether you use DSLR Controller or Helicon.

So I'm at my wits end here and I'm wondering if anybody can help me out. I cant get either my 7d or my 1d mk IV to detect on my tablet or phone. Which apps did you try ? Have you tried "USB Host Diagnostics" ? Which firmwares are you running ? In case of the SII, make sure you are running the latest Android 4.x firmware (there are some 2.x firmwares that work, but there's not really a list which ones). Not sure about the Tab2, from what I know about every firmware should pretty much work, so that could hardly be the problem ... Just guessing here, really.

I did try USB Host Diagnostics along with another USB storage app, Helicon and a RAW image viewer. I'm running 4.1.1 on the Tab and 4.0.4 on the SII. None of them detected the cameras. I guess I was just trying to determine if there was a step I was overlooking, like needing to install some specific driver package or something but it sounds like you're saying it should work out of the box on current firmware. Could it be that every one of my cables and all of the connectors I tried are insufficient? Because if so, that's really frustrating. Could someone who has this working point me to a connecter/cable combo that they know for a fact works? Is there any other steps I may have missed while troubleshooting to isolate the problem?

Hey again,

It appears my question from a couple pages ago got missed (it happens) so I'll just put it out there again. Has anyone had a chance to try out the new STM lenses from Canon (such as the 40mm) and see how they work with the focus feature of DSLR Controller?

The app was working great earlier when I first used it on my GS3 and connect it to my Canon 550D. Somehow, after a couple of times I unplug and plug in the cable the camera seems to show 'lagging' state with [Busy] Signal and earlier today I can't get seem to get it working as it always stuck with the [Busy] signal now everytime I plug in the cable to GS3.

Anyone have the same prob or fix on this? I believe this is 550Ds prob, or i dunno.

DLCPM Controller over WiFi with WFT-E5

I wonder if there's any way into connecting the android tablet running DSLR Controller application to a DSLR Canon camera over a wireless device attached directly to the camera like WFT-E5 (for a Canon 7D for instance), without the use of the USB cable ?
I already have the application running with no problem with a Samsung Galaxy Note tablet with USB cable, but i wonder if there's any way to have more freedom using this application and the WFT-E5 on the Canon camera..
Thank you in advance for your answer.

What was the output of USB Host Diagnostics ?

Yes, it could be the case that all the cables and connectors you have tried are faulty - but it's not very likely. Of course, you could have a strong case of bad luck. But even cables that do not work with DSLR Controller should let USB Host Diagnostics detect for example a USB stick.

It could also be both your firmwares are somehow incompatible - which is weird, as both devices have firmwares that work, and you being stuck with a firmware on both devices that doesn't happen to work is also not very likely.

In truth, I find it hard to guess. You can have a faulty firmware, faulty hardware, faulty cables, etc, but it seems you have tried multiple of each and still get nothing - that's just weird. I know people are using DSLR Controller with both of these devices (the S2 I have myself, even).

It appears my question from a couple pages ago got missed (it happens) so I'll just put it out there again. Has anyone had a chance to try out the new STM lenses from Canon (such as the 40mm) and see how they work with the focus feature of DSLR Controller?

Are you low on battery by any chance ? Weird stuff starts happening if either the Android device or the camera are low on battery. There is no structural issue with the 550D at least that I know of, it's one of my test devices.

I wonder if there's any way into connecting the android tablet running DSLR Controller application to a DSLR Canon camera over a wireless device attached directly to the camera like WFT-E5 (for a Canon 7D for instance), without the use of the USB cable ?

Theoretically this is possible, but I have not built it yet. Why not ? Because I don't have a WFT and they're darned expensive. I assume this will also allow compatibility with the 6D's Wi-Fi mode. I'm trying to find either one to borrow or rent, but so far have had no luck. It's high up on my priority list though, and I go looking for ones to borrow or rent every few weeks.

Thank you very much for your fast response..i really do appreciate taking the time to answer...and I so look forward for this implementation when the time and having the device will allow you to do it... as i did bought an WFT especially for this kind of things so i can have more freedom over the tablet and camera when shooting outdoor especially wild life.
Thanks again for your excelent work...

There was some talk about trying to do it using an Android stick (like rikomagic for example) but no one seems to have taken the plunge yet.

In an effort to de-duplicate a lot of information, I have moved the bulk of it to the DSLR Controller website. This thread still remains the place to get support, discuss, and ask questions, though!

DSLR Controller was the first and remains the best app to fully control your Canon EOS DSLR from your Android device, through USB cable or Wi-Fi connection. No computer or laptop required, no root required, only a compatible mobile device, a compatible camera, and if connecting through USB, the right cable.

We strongly suggest you read up on the website ( http://dslrcontroller.com/ ) about what DSLR Controller can do, how it works, and how to use it, before purchasing. The website contains a wealth of information you should know before using.

Not all devices are compatible, especially if you want to use a USB connection. For a free app you can use to test compatibility, see the "Remote Release" app ( http://market.android.com/details?id=eu.chainfire.remoterelease ). If you need a refund, go to our website ( http://dslrcontroller.com/ ) and follow the instructions in the FAQ entry. We cannot process refunds through email.

Usage notes, feature lists, device compatibility lists, changelogs, FAQs, can all be found on our website: http://dslrcontroller.com/

Most questions should go to the support and discussion thread at XDA-Developers.com:
    http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1202082

I am a professional architectural photographer and have adopted your DSLR app into my workflow. Thank you for the great design and amazing functionality. It is a pleasure to work with*.

I would like to know what the future holds for DSLR Contorller. I noticed you are not very active on this forum (last post on 2/26/2015), but wanted to encourage you to keep on developing because I, We need it!!!

    ...
    .

DSLR Controller was originally built for Android 2.x years ago, and a lot of things have changed both in the camera world as well as the mobile world. Despite bolting on many improvements, the code shows its age. To take it to the next level and get everything I want into it (customizability, compatibility, portability, speed, etc), a lot of the core needs to be changed, the UI needs to be changed (if not in appearance or functionality then certainly how it's been coded), etc. It pretty much comes down to not just overhauling major parts, but completely redoing it from scratch, and rebuilding it as envisioned from the ground up.

This brings with it a number of issues. It is a lot of development time (and thus money) investment up front, of which you will see no results, until it is almost done. In the mean time, you can't really release anything that isn't up to par with the current version of DSLR Controller, and you can't just replace the current version as old users/devices may no longer be compatible, stranding paying customers. A lot of additional equipment needs to be gotten and tested with to ensure compatibility and portability (remote and end-user testing isn't really workable with apps like these). Not to mention that DSLRs are pretty much doomed, and this is definitely being reflected in daily sales.

The past year hasn't been very good on a personal level, which isn't your problem of course, but it is one reason for the lapse in development of certain apps. This one adds to the fact that in light of the above, it feels like a waste of resources to spend a lot of time on improvements in the current app. There have been talks with a team (from a big brand in the camera world) to take over the IP, pretty much solving the resource problem, but ultimately that fell through, after the talks taking up a large part of my time for months.

Also, I know it seems like DSLR Controller has generated a lot of funds, but spread out over the years its been available, subtracting equipment costs, corporate taxes, wage taxes, etc, you wouldn't be able to hire one(!) half-competent coder for the money left at today's going rates, not to mention the risks involved with hiring people. Even though I do get paid and get all these toys to play with, wanting to build it has always been a large part of this, as there are definitely more profitable ways to spend the time. At the same time having to compete with $300 equipment, and people still complaining about the $8 price.

This app is also a complete nightmare to support, as by far the bulk of the connection issues are not due to the app itself, but due to camera configuration, phone configuration, hardware incompatibilities, firmware incompatibilities, etc. That is, excepting the case where DSLR Controller just hangs, which sometimes (but definitely not always) is an issue with the app. Not to mention the droves of questions and reported issues by people who simply don't understand how their cameras work.

All of that being said, I do believe there may be a business case where a rebuild with additional features and support for Nikon and/or Sony and/or (insert other brands here) and other OSs like Linux, iOS, OS X, Windows, etc using a shared core may at least break even. That is, providing I can find competent developers to do it (as there is no way I can pull this off by myself), and finding said competent developers with at least somewhat relevant skills might in fact be the biggest problem to solve. Still, even in the best case scenario, I don't believe any work will get started before end-of-summer.

Don't mistake the lack of visible activity for lack of interest. What to do with DSLR Controller and how to get there is something I consider every day, as in the end, it's still the app I've enjoyed most developing over the years. But if the solution means spending more resources updating the current app, developing a new one, or investing funds to get a whole new company off the ground with a handful of people to cover both major brands and major OSs - that I don't know yet. But I do hope to have an answer to that sooner rather than later.

(this post was written in a rush as I need to run for another appointment but I didn't want to leave this unsaid, so if it's jumping here and there and not fully coherent, that's why)
    6
Hey Chainfire, I was wondering if there was an ETA for the next update? I know asking such things is never liked, Im not looking for a hard date just a rough idea and if there is anything else we can do to help?

After next week I have three weeks reserved for exclusive DSLR Controller work, if that doesn't finished the upcoming update, I'd be surprised :)
    5
The price will go up once v1.0 is reached, but the upgrade is free for those who have this BETA???

Why can't I see free version?

Because it's good software and the developer deserves to get paid. Beta doesn't mean it's not valuable, it means that the software isn't very mature or well tested. if you want it now, you pay. If you want to pay once it's well tested and proven then wait.

Either way, quit your sniveling people. This is an AMAZING deal at that price. If you can afford a DSLR and know how to use it, you can afford 10 times this and would gladly pay it. If you think otherwise, you likely don't need this software to begin with and have nothing to complain about.
