This makes sense since UI elements are still active when the unit "crashes". For example, if the unit freezes when a busy wheel is spinning, it will continue to spin even though no further touch input is registered or application contents are updated.

Since this seems to happen mostly to Nexus 10s (I haven't been following this with other devices, so I could be wrong), I wonder if it's the Mali T-604 drivers that are at fault. It's a brand new GPU architecture after all.

And to get to them logs after a reboot, check /proc/last_kmsg. If the UI is failing, you should still be able to ADB (or SSH should you prefer) into it, and check whatever is going on with dmesg (for kernel debugging) and logcat (for the system)

Would the logcat be any better than the built in bug reporting once it comes back up?

I think logcat starts way earlier in the the boot process than that bug reporting option that I think you're talking about (which I believe is bugmailer service).
