It's really not that bad if you follow the instructions completely. If you get in a bind, just hold on and run over to irc chat and the nice folks there will fix you up.
+1 to that
Very easy and straightforward if you follow the instrucitons. I bet some people are having issues getting ADB to work properly (especially Windows laptops). It worked fine for me the very first time I plugged in my phone. I had downloaded the latest ADK..took the files I needed, ADB, fastboot, backup.ab, AdbWinapi, etc., and had them at C:\ADB and it worked like I charm. After getting unlocked and heading over to HTCDev I installed HTC Sync and finished the rooting process without a hitch.
But after that I couldn't ever get ADB to work again, even when I uninstalled HTC Sync. Always get killing the server, error no device found, etc.
Fastboot still worked fine so I could flash kernels, but nothing through ADB. Obviously if I had these issues from the start I wouldn;t have been able to unlock and then root.
So, I saw in another forum on here somewhere to use PDANet as it loads the proper USB driver which allows your laptop/ADB to work/see your device. So I made sure HTC Sync and any HTC drivers were uninstalled, rebooted the laptop and installed PDANet 3.50 on my desktop (which also installs it on your phone during the process) and voila! ADB works like a charm again from my C:\ADB folder. PDANet is free in the market.
So I guess my advice to those having issues with the unlock process due to their ADB being stubborn is to make sure you have the latest ADK and the necessary files in your ADB folder. Uninstall any HTC Sync programsand drivers, an install PDANet 3.50 and see if your ADB works properly before attempting this. A quick "adb devices" command will show you if it sees your phone. I also did "adb reboot" and "adb reboot-bootloader" just to see that it was working/working after a reboot before I went through the unlock process.
If those test adb commands work for you, you should be able to easily unlock your device following the instructions. They are detailed and spot on.
