Go For It...

Im on the stock OTA kitkat...should i wait for a better method to root and install recovery or will this do? @micmars whats ur input on this? :D

The existing root is insanely good, and the recent TWRP and Philz run flawlessly. What would be the wait? This is flash TWRP via PC Odin, flash Chainfire SU zip via recovery, you're full-on running a wonderful ROM.

With the Unlocked Bootloadder, it's pure gold. If you've tripped Knox, which I believe that you have, then it's full on go for it.

The majority of the boot loops were happening due to a small mistake that had nothing to do with the rooting process. This method works flawlessly!

I like many others was having an issue rooting my Note 3 so I figured I'd post a temporary fix until the official Method Comes along :) Freeza, Twrp Team, CF Root And Others.

WARNING! I am not responsible if you Brick your phone or any damage that may inccur.

Step 1. Download Odin/ CF-Root http://download.chainfire.eu/352/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-hlte-hltexx-smn9005.zip

Step 2. Download Engineering Bootloader N900PVPUCNAB http://xdaforums.com/showpost.php?p=50489993&postcount=1

Step 3 Download Twrp http://xdaforums.com/showpost.php?p=50333147&postcount=398

Step 4. Open Odin & (Put the Phone into Download Mode)

Step 5. Install Engineering Bootloader (In the Bootloader Section)

Step 6. Reboot Phone & Put it back into download mode & Install Tar File that Came with Odin

Step 7. Reboot Phone and Put back into download mode and Install the TWRP Download file

Thats it ;) Hope this helps

======================================================================================

IF YOUR PHONE IS STUCK IN A BOOTLOOP FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS

If you're phone is currently in a bootloop from trying to root earlier in order to get your phone back working all you need to do is pull the battery. Turn the phone on in Download mode and press the Vol Down key to cancel and your phone will boot like normal :)

I successfully updated to KK with the NAB TAR. Now I am trying to root. Can I just use the Tar in the download and follow step 6 to root my phone without tripping KNOX? (Step 6. Reboot Phone & Put it back into download mode & Install Tar File that Came with Odin)

Not all the time, Only if you have tried Rooting before and you phone gets stuck in a bootloop ;)

I just clicked on the download and it downloaded just fine for me ;) On a side note make sure you use that specific version.

Not true. The engineering bootloader is not a necessity in any of this.

I'd like to be proven wrong, but according to this link, it will trip KNOX: https://www.samsungknox.com/en/node/617

It could trip Knox, and your working assumption should be that it will.

I flashed the engineering bootloader instead of using the stock one. Are there any downsides to this? Will it work just as well as the stock one?

There are only but benefits with little accompanying downside, especially if you already have it.

It allows possibilities of which you could not avail with a locked bootloader. One example would be that you can add a future baseband if superior, and nothing else (ie no changes to the rest of the device). Another is, theoretically, you could go back to MJ4, while those with a locked loader could not.

Has anyone tried to go back to mj4 from the engineered bl yet? Haven't seen anyone mention it yet.

Nope, but freeza mentioned you could.

I don't desire to, but others have expressed an interest.

The path, I think, would be NAB to NA4 to MJ4.

I have a new note 3 running 4.4.2 already NAB but I want to root but I see people talking about NC5 what are the steps I take to get root and be on nc5?

Sent from my SM-N900P using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

Please hie yourself over to the dev forum, and below is one approach, and an outline of the general sequence of things (Note that this will trip Knox)...

    1. Flash via PC Odin
    -->NC5 Engineering Bootloader

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/pck1vn1tdm56qy4/nc5firmware.tar

    -->Flash NC5 Modem

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/lw5yafhtiomeyw9/nc5baseband.tar

    2. Flash RECOVERY of Choice (TWRP 2.7.0.1 for TouchWiz KitKat link below)

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/c1snl3g6u7ucy0q/openrecovery-twrp-2.7.0.1-hltespr-4.4.img.tar

3A. Select Pre-Rooted Rom of Choice, or

3B. Flash Superuser 1.94 from recovery,

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/ka3q9a38v4mcr08/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.94.zip

    4. Profit

Need your help....I thought I knew what I was doing and then got confused and read some more and got confused even more. So I think I followed the ops instructions and came from 4.2 root to nab unroot. That was not my intent...I want wanted to go from root to root. Anyway now that I'm updated and uprooted I am lost on how to get back to root. Treat me like a noob and it doesn't help that I now have blonde roots but spoon feed me the steps I need to get root. Like I said I have read two threads so far and have confused and frustrated by self. Hopefully someone else will benefit.

    No problem...

If you're OK with TWRP and a slightly earlier version of superuser, do the following (this assumes your computer reads your device just fine)...

Files you'll need before starting, TWRP for KitKat on computer

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/2b72hmhapanm2w9/hltespr-recovery.img.tar

    Superuser zip on device,

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/4jvmrwycelxgywv/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.91.zip

    1. Load PC Odin on your computer, right click, select run as administrator
    2. Power off phone
    3. Put phone in download mode (power + volume down + home), remove any case on device
    4. Assume that PC Odin has auto restart selected by default, the option is grayed out, you can't change it, plug device into PC, using same USB port you used to copy files
    5. Load TWRP tar in link above into PDA slot on PC Odin
    6. Hold phone in palm of your hand, have your fingers at the ready to hold volume up and home simultaneously, don't do it yet, just be ready, think it through in your mind, your eyes will be on your phone, now click start on PC Odin, look right back at your phone
    7. That recovery file flashes in like 5-10 seconds, when done, and phone flash finishes, when it starts to power cycle, hold home and volume up simultaneously, you're now in TWRP recovery
    8. Wipe caches if you want (dalvik and cache partitions), now back to TWRP main, tap install, navigate to location on phone superuser zip resides
    9. Flick that knob on TWRP, tap reboot, profit.

That's as detailed as I can get at the moment.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

Yeah at first I figured I would get boot loops but then I figured what the hell, it works for ota than why not this way.

My guess is that TWRP restored your data, and left your boot and system intact. Good for you!

So if I'm correct by jos's phone status now, he actually flashed his mj4 nandroid, was running mj4, and then flashed the mj4 to NAB file.... Curiosity is killing me to try...

I don't know why I'm talking about you like you're not here Jon... Haaa

I wouldn't try it that way, I'd extract it from Titanium Backup, data only, which that program can do, extract data (and system from a nand).

But yeah, it looks like TWRP is very safe. It grabbed what it could use, in his case, data.

Thank you sir, you have been a big help on here for a lot of people and much appreciated.

I want to get back to root as well though and I am thinking this would be the easiest that I have found. I have been going over posts for the last two days and haven't seen anything about a one - click method. Can you possibly post a link for me to check out this method?

    Thanks for the kind words.

As to one-click packages, we have none other than the extraordinary contributions made by the legendary @rwilco12.

His one-click packages for stock NAB can be found in the development forum, the link for which is as follows...
