In version 3 no wonder you are having trouble, at least in the demo, it all looks similar, Contacts > press right side of contact > then choose edit > where has the photo option gone????!!!!!

Problem eventually resolved - I hit on it by chance at about the same time that the tech support came back with the answer - and it's not the same as the manual or earlier versions.....
You have to go Contacts|New (or Edit |Contacts for an existing one) and then there will be a small white + in a green circle top left adjacent to the avatar position. Click this and THEN you get the Photo sub-menu. It works absolutely fine once you know where it is. Be OK if that was what the instructions said, and then appears a bit more intuitive, but in this case reading the instructions was a definite red herring !
