You know, this is not specific to this phone. The 'fixes' related here, switching settings etc, are available on many, if not all smartphones. The primary drain in these cases are most likely band switching, or the lack of band switching. Take any smartphone into a dead area and watch the battery drain as it continually tries to lock on a band. These switch changes simply lock to a band.
The Idle reading 'could' indicate, I'm locked to a band that is not available. My son lives south of Olympia WA with bad 3g/4g reception. If he leaves this setting on Auto, the battery drains in a few quick hrs. If he locks on Edge, his battery lasts 3 days.
If you're in a high 4g area, your battery usage can simply be a 4g power thing. But because 4g is not wide spread, yet, locking on the high bands will cause the phone to poll for the high band more often...increasing the drain.
We all want to say we have a 4g phone. But having a 4g phone in areas without great 4g coverage = High battery drain unless you manage the 4g polling.
Some place on XDA is a real good document on this. The only issue with this thread is it combines multiple reasons into a single solution without defining that Good 4g Coverage on a 4G phone will still use more battery than good 3G coverage on a 3G phone. Changing these setting won't impact this...unless you turn off the 4g settings and force the phone to poll only on 3g or below. That uses less power by default.
Lock to a high band in a Good 4g area = same battery impact
Lock to a High Band in a marginal 4G area = higher battery drain
Lock to a 3g band in a good 4g area = better battery impact
Lock to a 3g band in a marginal 4g area = better battery impact
Lock to a lower band in a good 4g/3g area = even better battery impact
Lock to a lower band in a marginal 4g/3g area = even better battery impact
Lock to any band in any area with questionable coverage = bad battery result...turn the phone off.
Test this on any smartphone...Apple, Windows Mobile or Android....its the same.
