How do I download music files from the computer to the phone or even get the computer to recognize the phone as a drive?

Download Zune from microsoft and use it. As for seeing it as a drive, i think you should get a flash drive

You must use the Zune software for transferring music/media to and from the phone directly. USB mass storage is not currently supported, although there are hacks to enable (but break zune syncing I believe)

If you put your phone in bootloader mode you can use it as a flash drive. However don't expect to use it as a phone after that.
