maybe this tech will be used in 5 years time but then again maybe it will have failed by then. I have a contact less barclays card and the 1 time I found a shop which used the tech it didnt work. chip and pin is just fine.

This is the one feature on the phone I really couldn't care if it was present or not.

Well for starters we have the Olympics in 2012, both Visa and Mastercard have massive contracts with various services to roll out NFC for then, London Underground is looking to try to get it in for then...for once we will be leading the way where NFC is concerned!! Barclays have already integrated "contactless" technology in their bank cards, my mate is a barclays customer and he is already using it.

I've been told Samsung have confirmed to Clove that no NFC hardware is present in the UK models and Clove will be notifying everyone that pre-ordered of this shortly.

From Cloves website -

UK Samsung Galaxy S II will NOT feature NFC
Wednesday, April 27, 2011

Since some early reviews of the Samsung Galaxy S II surfaced in recent days there has been some conflicting information regarding the NFC (Near Field Communication) capabilities of the device – a feature that was advertised and since hinted at being territory specific. Some reports have stated that the NFC chip may be present but disabled via software to be released by a future upgrade.

We have spoke again today to those in charge of UK distribution and have had it confirmed that UK stock will NOT feature NFC as standard. Also there will NOT be an NFC chip within the device so there will be no ‘software upgrade’ available in the future to enable this.

Some devices worldwide may feature the chip and rumour has it these units will be physically thicker. We have removed NFC from our website specification for the Samsung Galaxy S II and will be informing all customers with pre-orders about this development; providing the choice whether to continue with your order or not.

If you have an order for the Samsung Galaxy S II and wish to cancel due to this change in specification, contact us on sales@clove.co.uk

First stock of the Samsung Galaxy S II is still on course to ship to customers on May 3rd.

Well that's pretty definitive - is it an expensive component or was it some special per country requirement? Seems a bit odd that they would leave it out TBH.

It's a couple of pounds max! cheaper in most cases, the technology can be built into a micro SD card, including the antenna so it wouldn't add to the physical bulk of the phone if it was included.

My opinion is they've used it as a marketing tactic - they saw the competition had left it out and will leave it out so it persuades you to jump to the SGS3 when that come out.

If I get a S. Korean model without contract, will NFC work in UK to pay at M&S for example?
Or do I need use a contract UK bought NFC Galaxy S2 which will be rolled out in June?

No. Your bank or carrier has to make the necessary partnerships to put your payment info on the chip. Those are not in place in the UK yet.

So NFC is still useless. One it's not used in big numbers and it will take some years.
The other you need a carrier and the carrier needs to have a contract with a bank and third they both need to have a contract with the NFC based store.
So no point having a heavier and thicker S II.
