Exclamation [Q] Bug! Huge problem - Nook reset itself to factory

Hi Guys,

Firstly, please tell me if I've posted this in the wrong forum.

Today I tried connecting my NookColor to my Motorola Atrix via the Motorola tethering/wifi hotspot app. The Nook discovered the wifi network fine, which was unproteched (motorola default). When I connected to it the Nook said something like "Due to an authentication error your Nook will now reboot". I didn't have a choice and thought it'd just power cycle so I hit okay.

What happened next was a long reboot process which ended in the factory default "Welcome/Setup your new NookColor" screen.

I tried going through the setup. The last step was to connect to a network, so I tried my phone again. It was the only network available. It errored and said please turn off the nook or call customer service.

Any idea what has happened? I have connected my nook to wireless networks many times before, just not my phone's hotspot. Can I just follow the autonooter steps again and be okay? I haven't touched it since this happened.

My mom's Nook had this same problem. Any ideas? It was rooted running the stock firmware crack.

there are a few threads on this... the nook will factory reset wiping all your data. no one knows what triggers it though... unfortunately.

its happened to me when accessing the b&n apps... pain in the butt.

Yup, someone at B&N made a biiiiig boo boo. This is happening on a wide scale to Nook owners. Luckily for me, I've had WiFi off the last couple of days while trying to assess whether the Sqlite mods really do block the 1.2 OTA update, so I was not affected by this.

Also, I just signed up with Sprint and got an HTC Evo 4G, so I'm obsessed with my new toy lately.

Thanks for the quick reply.

So are you saying this could have happened at any moment? And isn't necessarily because of connecting to the tether?

I don't think I had 1.2 update installed, but are you saying that the book may have auto updated to it on it's own?

Thx for the help

Mine is the same thing, shows "Error Problems setting up your nook, call customer service, etc." Then all i get is power off or device info. They keep telling me it's their network being down but i feel it's been up for a while now.

This will not happen on CM7. It happened to me on stock. Not sure if this is applicable to your situation, but I had restored my system files with Titanium. I learned that is not a good thing to do. Going into the Native Nook/Reading software would trigger this.

Happened to me a few weeks ago as well. Was just piddling around in the stock settings.

Someone on the B&N forum claimed that B&N remotely resets nooks that it detects have been rooted, but I think that's a bit far-fetched.
