X10 Mini Pro on AT&T questions Smartphone?

Hello all, need a new phone after my previous one met an untimely death.
Found this phone searching the web, it's pretty close to the kind of phone I'd like to use. Have a few questions.

1: Is this phone recognized by the AT&T network as a smart phone? I currently don't have a data plan, and would like to avoid being forced onto a data plan. Does the same go for the regular X10 Mini

2: What's the average battery life? Wouldn't expect to use a lot of data. Is it a battle to constantly kill apps. to keep battery life reasonable. Are there ways to have the phone automatically kill applications after a certain amount of idle time?

3: Does the DEJI BST-38 1500mAh battery make a significant difference? Wondering of the users who've had it for a while. Has it made life better.

4: Is the phone durable? Can it survive drops, some minimal abuse.

5: Would you buy it again? I try not to update my phone to often, I want a phone I can be happy with for some time.
