I haven't studied it as far as battery drain, but I have noticed that the map service will not die. I have gone into running services and tried to kill it but it immediately restarts itself.
I don't believe that used to be the case.

This is an interesting theory. I was having fantastic battery life on Mosaic until yesterday, & now that you guys mention Maps, I did use it yesterday. This morning, after a full charge overnight, my battery was down to ~60% after 4hrs. I checked the battery stats, & it said that AndroidOS was using up far, far more than it ever had up till yesterday. I just rebooted the phone to see if that might change things, but back in the battery stats, it now says that AndroidOS is using 59% of my battery - again, far greater than anytime previous since flashing Mosaic.
How are you checking running processes? ATK? I just looked in OSMonitor, & Maps is indeed running, but all of the running processes have "0%" load.
