If it's anything like the Galaxy S 1, it's about as far from fragile as a phone can get. Galaxy S phones are probably some of the hardiest non-ruggedized phones around - they can take huge drops and fairly nasty conditions.
Don't let looks fool you - plastic is generally a lot tougher than the sort of crap you get on iPhones and that. Its a blend of hard and soft plastics designed to absorb shocks when a tough looking glass and metal phone would just crack. The plastics absorb a lot of the force and buffer the screen and internals, while metal just passes it straight through. The weakest part of phones isn't the hard outer casing, it's the glass screen and some of the internals which need to be protected.
EDIT: Just wanted to clarify: soft materials in phones are good in the same way that airbags in cars are better than making the steering wheel out of cast iron.
