Default Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly.

Hello,

Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly. Is the error message I'm getting.

I have a unlocked Nexus S (T) with da8206299fe6.signed-soju-ota-121341.da820629 (2.3.4 94MB) with netarchy-nexus-1.3.0.11-cfs-2.3.4-signed and su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed installed. I use the Voodoo app for colors. I also modified the database to get video chat for GTalk on T-Mobile.

Looks like only the contacts have this issue:

I found this:
05-12 20:29:01.428 D/ContactsSyncAdapter( 227): error with entity Entity: _id=282 starred=0 contact_id=285 name_verified=0 is_restricted=0 dirty=1 deleted=0 version=2 account_type=com.google account_name=x@gmail.com
I guess dirty=1 indicates this error?
Now it listed a specific contact in the log.
If I delete this contact on the phone it is also deleted on Gmail web page. Sync is working half way I guess. But I still get this contact in the log, but I don't see the contact on the phone or on the webpage.
I logged in to Gmail and restored my contacts to 05/02/2011, but this also didn't change anything.

05-12 20:29:01.428 D/ContactsSyncAdapter( 227): -> data_version=0 is_super_primary=0 mimetype=vnd.android.cursor.item/photo is_primary=0 _id=2357 data15=[B@40777490

05-12 20:29:02.068 D/ContactsSyncAdapter( 227): error uploading photo https://www.google.com/m8/feeds/phot...%40gmail.com/x, disabling uploads until it changes again

05-12 20:29:02.575 D/SyncManager( 110): not retrying sync operation because the error is a hard error: authority: com.android.contacts account: Account {name=x@gmail.com, type=com.google} extras: [] syncSource: 0 when: 18365895 expedited: false

I restored my contacts back to 1 hour ago and I removed the picture from this contact... but not luck... still the same crap... what else to do?

Regards,
Markus Schulz

PS: I also tried numerous reboots...

Should I wipe the phone and start from scratch?

PS: My Gmail is still working... I forgot to turn the sync on again.

If you do, be sure to let me know what happens. I've had the same issue since I upgraded to 2.3.4. Oddly, contact sync still seems to be working at least unidirectionally (when I change something on the phone it's reflected in my Google contacts), but the system still detects a problem.

I'm just reading through the development help and it is allowed for a photo to be null. I'm not sure why it is so unhappy? I guess this may a bug.

Thanks to Eric Hanchroe here is how to resolve it:
Turn all synchronization off. Force stop and clear data on all contacts applications. Turn sync on again, this fixed it for me.

So it does. Seems to be behaving itself, but I'll keep an eye on it and post here with further problems should they occur. Thank you for the fix!

You should have added a warning that contact data may be lost.

In the best of circumstances the data will be recovered from the Google account and will re-sync back to the phone. But there are circumstances in which this will not work, for example, if the user has added contacts while synchronization was disabled or already not working. Contacts stored in the phone, rather than in the Google account, will also be lost.

I recommend backups before deleting data.

There are also various other possible causes and respective solutions. For example, a soft reset (removing the battery for 10 s) can solve the problem in some cases.

The cause may often be the contact data, but it could just as well be calendar data, Google Documents data, or any other synced data. A method to find the cause could be to start a manual sync and watch which part of the data syncs successfully and which doesn't. It may help to look at the system log.

tried this and didnt work.
Ive been getting problems only with my mail which is through hotmail.

I went back through all my downloaded apps and was going to start unistalling them to see which one might work. I then noticed a app HTC Sync, I didnt recall downloading this so I deleted and now all works a treat.
