It seems that it had a ROM on it which had some system files on the SD. Did it have two partitions ?
How about trying to boot it with back button + power ? It should take you to the fastboot menu.
Desire AMOLED S-OFF
ROM: RCMixS v 2.1 t4 CM7 hboot
Recovery: Ra 2.0.1
Radio 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27
Kernel: 2.6.35.10-gdd6551[v06]-snq

All I know, I've learned from others so thank the community.

The first question would be do you rooted your desire?

How do you formated your sd card.

Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
1. HTC One X - OrDroid
2. Samsung Galaxy S3 mini - stock

3. Galaxy Tab 2 10.1" (P5110)

MyRom: SoulMIUI 2.4. final (A2SDX with Aroma-Installer powered by amarullz)

I'm guessing the same as paul.c...

Assuming the Desire was not bought brand new, had a custom rom on it, partitioned SD card, re-formatting the SD has screwed up the ROM...

So the options are to see if there's a recovery installed as paul.c said, Power on while holding VOL Down and probably RUU ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=869048 ) it to start with...
