HTC Flyer - pre-purchase thoughts
As an artist and a student, the HTC Flyer is really looking like that one tablet I've been looking for. Not only will it allow me to take notes in a classroom, but I can also replace my current analog sketchbook with any number of drawing apps (autodesk sketchbook mobile!) on the go, and the battery life, from what engadget tells me, will be enough to last me all day away from home and then some.
My problem though, is that I'm not just an artist and a student, but a total android nerd. I need the latest and greatest android version, I feel that most OEM layers (sense) detract from the android experience, and if it's not rooted, it's booted. So by know you can obviously understand my internal conflict over whether or not the Flyer is worth it. will it be rooted quickly? Sure, of course, this is XDA after all! but, will I be able to get honeycomb 3.1, and the bigger question, will I still be able to use the pen in 3.1. That Pen is the sole reason the Flyer skyrocketed to the top of my tablet want list. I am a Wacom tablet user with an Intuos 4 XL that has totally replaced my need for a mouse (or a paintbrush for that matter), so, as I realize the magic pen is no where near as precise as a wacom pen, that feature is a driving decision in my future android tablet purchase. And if I wanted to get really out there, I could start being worried if Ice Cream Sandwich will come to the flyer (and yes, I already am).
Now, another 10" HTC tablet is supposed to be out in June for the US, and given statements from HTC and the release schedule, I have no doubt in my mind that it will be a honeycomb tablet. Whether or not this tablet has the pen as well will be interesting to see, and if not, I believe I'll probably still want the Flyer anyway
Pretty much I'm leaving it up to you guys to decide for me. No release date or price has been been announced for the US (That I've heard of), so I'll be waiting to see what happens with this device as those of you in the UK get a chance to tweak it to it's full potential.
