black android screen after OTA

The OTA froyo update from t-mobile/google/whomever messed up my myTouch 3G 1.5mm phone. It worked perfectly for a few months post froyo then it started randomly rebooting. Then it just got stuck on the black Android screen animation screen. I can get into FASTBOOT and Recovery but in Recovery, the action button does not work. I've read that the update makes the button inoperable in recovery.

So my question: is my phone beyond repair? I shelved the phone and bought a t-mo comet (but the screen cracked last night, killing the phone). I'm desperate.
