Default HTC Keyboard?
Is there one that will work with the arc?

I have tried 2 or 3 versions of it but none of them will work for me

Try Smart Keyboard from Market ( Pro or free version )
they offer an HTC themed keyboard this might help you

i used it on my arc and it work fine, just extract it on ur sdcard root and install it using any file explorer

You can generate your own HTC IME Keyboard here with a customized skin
