Verizon/Samsung has acknowledged a know bug in the stock Wifi hotspot apk, Samsung has released a fix (MR2) which will correct this issue. VZW is currently testing the fix and will be releasing it OTA by June 9th.

The Mobile Hotspot application has stopped working on the Samsung Droid Charge starting on 6/2/11 Posted 06/03/2011 Issue Description Customers have reported that the Mobile Hotspot application has stopped working on the Samsung Droid Charge starting on 6/2/11. The device was launched with the Mobile Hotspot (and Mobile Broadband Connect service) offered at no additional charge to customers for a limited time. Due to a software bug on the Charge, the device has now disabled the Mobile Hotspot. Customers who now try to launch the application will see the screen momentarily change to a black screen, and then return to the menu with the same Mobile Hotspot icon.

Resolution Plan Samsung has found the root cause and has submitted a software upgrade (MR2) to Verizon Wireless. We are currently testing this software and expect to approve it and release to customers as an "over-the-air" upgrade by June 9 end of week. Once the upgrade is installed on the customer's device, the Mobile Hotspot will resume working at no additional charge until the promotional period expires. Work Around There currently is no known workaround for this issue. Cool. Glad theres a fix. My Wifi tether app is annoying me because it only wants to do Ad-Hoc and Xbox and PS3 don't like that.

The current workaround is to set the phone's date/time back to May 31. This was posted on VZWSupport's twitter page, and I verified it last night when I let a friend grab the GB OTA for his DX.

So what, June 15th? We get 6 whole days? I wonder if they're going to "extend" the promotional period because of the troubles, crappy move if not.

Glad I rooted. Time to get rid of that garbage and install something that works (and allows me to use MY device and MY service that I pay for to its full...)

Confirmed. I asked a friend who works for Vzw today

I bought my SCH-I510 on Friday and was told the HotSpot function was broken and the Free period would 'likely' be extended.

I found a workaround by using the hotspot widget (at.mysandbox.android.hotspotwidget on market) to turn the hotspot on. I see the hotspot set as 'SCH-I510 abab' (MAC related) and found a web site that mentioned the default hotspot password is the phone number and now I am using the hotspot on my new Samsung Charge SCH-I510.

It's interesting that my second android (Nexus One) is getting 5mb down when the SCH-I510 is getting 11mb down.

Hopefully the fix addresses the crappy handoff between 4g and 3g, as well as spotty 3g-only data connectivity. I can dream, can't I?

just setting the date to anyday in May works on mine when using the hotspot
