It's a bit more than just a cable; it'll have some kind of bridge chip to convert the phone's MHL output to HDMI that current TV sets will accept. This is one reason why the existing MHL adapters require a charger input -- the bridge chip requires some power to operate, and you don't want to drain the phone's batteries by drawing the bridge chip power from it.
Once TVs with MHL interfaces appear on the market, a simpler, straight-through cable might work, but for now, you're stuck with the chipped adapter.
