Go to Settings->Phone Info->Battery usage. And look what applications use the battery most.

DONATE TO ME
Disable the data connections

There is an app called juice defender
Try that
It disables wifi & data when the screen locked
Saves upto 70 % of battery backup

Or you can try other application like that which are available in market

Also use advanced task killer to save ram and thus by increase battery backup

Does juice defender really save battery ....
I've heard that it drains even more battery to keep itself running in background ...

Has he inserted an old and used memory card into the phone? if yes then try removing the card and then ask him to use the phone, if the phone functions normally then there must be a problem with the card, may be some virus or something, if its not the memory card then ask him to do a hard reset, if the problem still persists then you would have to take the phone to the service centre

try to make a hard reset. my galaxy sl was draining 40% in airplane mode in 8 hour. After the hard reset my phone uses only 4-5% of battery in ariplane mode during the same 8 hour.

Maybe some config file or app uses a lot of battery perhaps it is in standby mode like it was for my phone
