cannot get 3g working

I have a GT-I5500...it's aparently a german device according to my pcode...I am unsure of why i cannot get a 3g signal in my area. 3g is available in my market, and my settings are the same as my old device (I copied them from the old device when i transferred the sim card). the phone is brand new, and otherwise works great. was able to upgrade to Froyo using kies, but still don't have a 3g setting. I have checked regularly and the use 2g servers is not checked. I know i can get a 3g connection, but is it possible there is something i am not doing with it, or something i can change to make it work? my carrier is a 3g GSM network, so i know the device should pick it up. any ideas?

BTW...only running on stock at this time...not rooted but running 2.2 froyo.
