Default [upgrade] 'seasoned' sgs vs 'futureproof' optimus 2x

i'm in need of a new phone because apparently my at&t phone does not connect to the 3g band here in asia. went to the local mall today and found out that the optimus 2x is only ~$25 more than the sgs. i know its kind of ironic for me to be asking this in a sgs forum thread but i'm looking for an unbiased opinion on which you would choose given the same opportunity. i'm coming from an inspire 4g and really would rather get the sgs because its a little more 'seasoned' and has a better dev community for support and custom roms that increase functionality but for $25 more, i'm wondering if the o2x is an option i should consider. sgs is no longer the flagship unit for samsung since the s2 is already out and the lg is newer and a bit more futureproof. any advice/recommendations?

i've seen both and i honestly think they're pretty close to each other... samoled is definitely better but only by a small-medium margin. super clear lcd can produce a quality display with more natural colors but of course cannot match the blacks or contrast ratio of samoled. honestly, if they had a i9000 with all the exact same specs/hardware except in sclcd, i'd go for that. i know theres the i9003 but theres a lot more changes in hardware rather than samoled to sclcd. only thing that kind of puts me off about samoled is the burnin/image retention but i've already considered that so it shouldnt bother me too much.

Hate to say it, looking to the next 18 months, I might choose optimus...... though I'd also probably wait til Oct and the sgs 3.

Don't know if sound is a deciding factor for you, if it is check out what supercurio has to say about it on Twitter. Not really qualified to give an opinion but I did read about the Optimus a while ago and I have to say based on some of the stuff I read, I wouldn't buy one. Sorry I can't provide links as I didn't bookmark them, but you could ask here http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=999

Personally I'd go for the SGS, I've played around with the S2, (my brother in law has one), and it's a damn fast phone, but not enough of a leap forward to convince me to upgrade. It doesn't even include an MHL adapter in the box! The S3 might be worth waiting for, but in that case you might want to consider which of your two current options will have the best resale value.

Good luck choosing

I would say the Optimus 2x is a bit better, but not that much. It's certainly not in the same league as other dual core phones such as the SGS2 or the Sensation.

i'm big on music so sound definitely is a factor; but not necessarily the deciding factor. i've read a lot of bad things about the 2x but all the problems seem like they can be fixed through software fixes and custom roms. the 2x definitely cannot even compare to units such as the sgs2 or sensation but its only $25 more than the sgs. as of now, i'm definitely leaning towards the sgs just because it is more refined but within the next year or so, i dont know how much progress the 2x will make. for just $25 more, it seems like the performance of the 2x will surpass the sgs due to hardware but thats all subject to the developer community as lg is pretty much next to useless when it comes to firmware/software updates. i know i'll be happy with either one but i just dont want to regret my decision for going sgs when, or even if, the lg o2x community picks up...

I also considered upgrading mu SGS to an LG p990 (2x) in the next months...

HW wise i think the LG is more "future - proof": dual core, 8mp camera, etc.

SW wise LG still did not deliver Gingerbread for P990 while their current Froyo build seems to be somehow buggy. The 100 $ question is whether LG will consider an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich (the i9000 will most likely not get this)? Without this upgrade the LG will be obsolete anyway in 6 months despite the good HW.

For 25$ more I would at least check the forums for LG P990i bugs etc. If it's usable I would take it

You won't regret getting an sgs. The optimus may be more advanced, and in your position I would probably get one - but the sgs is a ****-hot phone.

Dual-core processor + 8MP camera vs. screen + **** GPS? Definitely get the Optimus 2X. And even if LG doesn't update to ICS, custom ICS ROMs should run better on a dual-core than on a single-core.
