I decided to put extfs support in the kernel and not as a module.
$ adb shell cat /proc/filesystems
If you don't see any of the ext filesystems there, your kernel doesn't support it.
$ adb shell uname -a
Linux localhost 22.214.171.124-IHO #53 PREEMPT Thu Jul 21 16:59:29 PDT 2011 armv6l GNU/Linux
Check your kernel version against the OP. I've listed which ones got extfs /in kernel/ which is, unfortunately, what's needed for everything to work right now.
