Very useful info thanks. Is S-Off the same as locked boot-loader? If not where does locked boot loaders come in and should I be worried about it when flashing custom ROMs?

If your s-off you can flash what you want, if you have unlocked bootloader by htcdev you will need to flash the kernel from your pc every time you Flash a new Rom

which kernel do you have to use?

the kernel for each Rom is generally included in the Rom zip. There are numerous guides in this forum on how to get and flash the Rom kernel search in the stickies and guides

Well the desire s has ARM chip..... You might want to look at super SU instead, there seems to be les problems with it on the newer Roms
