Well, I didn't miss any calls - I just saw that when the phone is idle for a longer time (no calls, no SMS, no data) the bars drop from "4" (full signal) down to "2" - and go back to full-signal when the mobile network is running a "inquiry" to see if the logged-in devices are still connected to the tower where they are registered or if they fell of the matrix).
Anyway - no, there's actually no real benefit in odex'ing. The JIT creates the optimized files itself anyway (Dalvik cache). The only benefit is that it might boot a bit faster, but that's about it.
