You should be able to use just about any kernel for 4.03. lp9 our lpd even..lp7 is quite old now.

As I understand it (and I could be wrong) any kernel for 4.03 should work. Abyss, siyah, lp9, lpd. Whatever. Newer kernels and custom kernels may have bug fixes or better support for drivers. Myself I use siyah. But do your research as custom kernels have custom features that may or may not work on every ROM.
If you have cwm just use it or you can use Odin also.

And if I'm wrong, then I'm wrong and I'm not responsible for you bricking your phone.
Do your own research.

You can change kernel and modem just by flashing over the old one.(with the right file that is.)

Never apologise for not knowing.
Only apologise for thinking you know if you don't.

I am all for reading the firetruck manual, but the manual is huge and had a poor index.

Default trying to return to Canadian(Bell) Rom

I downloaded: Kernel_I9100MUGKG2.tar
Phone_I9100MUGKG2.tar
CSC_I9100MBCKG2.tar

Using ODIN3 v.1.85 I flashed my phone.
ODIN PASSED

on reboot I get: the Samsung splash screen then errors
second reboot: Samsung splash screen freezes

Boot to recovery and do a factory reset. Usually solves boot loops after a flash.
