unlock screen supposed to be dark?

unlike my htc evo when i turn the screen back on and want to unlock it the screen is all dark and i can barely see the wallpaper behind it

is this something that can be changed or is it something wrong?

Can you see the wallpaper once its unlocked?

yes, though my evo looks way sharper , i thought the photon was suppposed to be a better screen
