We have a larger battery than the Captivate (1750 mAh instead of 1500) but our charge current (600 mA) is not any higher.
Also, on our devices, CPU/screen usage count against that charge current limit - to the point where if you're running Navigation in a car dock at full brightness, your battery will actually drop slowly.
I have a kernel released for users of gtg465x's Infused v2.x Gingerbread ROMs that includes some experimental battery charging tweaks that should significantly improve charging for deeply discharged batteries. (However, to "be nice" to the battery, it drops charge rate below stock during the last 10-15%.)
This reminds me, I need to post in the dev thread for some battery tests from other devices.
