Default Section 6 confusion and failure

Samsung Fascinate stock 2.3.5

The third download link gave me "cwm-recovery-ALL.tar" rather than "CWM2.5_Voodoo.tar.md5" but I persevered... Everything went exactly as described up to and including booting into CM Recovery. The entry down one was "apply update from sdcard" rather than "Install zip from sdcard" but again I persevered, navigating down and pressing the power button. This however did nothing... Eventually I discovered the "home" softkey seemed to be functioning as "ok"; at least it took me to a list of files on my sd, with "su-2.3.6.1.x.zip" on top. I selected it as before, and got this:

Finding update
Opening update
Verifying update
Signature verification failed

... and I was returned to the menu to reboot.

So the installation of the CM recovery went fine but it seems to be of a different version and perhaps there is skew? Thank you in advance for more help.

This seems not to be the case. The CWM I got from cwmall announces itself as version 3. I also see this note in another forum:

So I did all the above and then when I try to boot in recovery using CWM I get the below message...

-- Install from package...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.

It brings me back to the blue recovery screen.
nem's post above this one is exactly correct on how to fix the problem, but in case you (or others reading this) aren't clear as to the WHY...

It's the "blue recovery screen" above. Stock recovery is blue. It requires signatures and non-test keys, and is therefore useless for us. Our standard Clockwork is red, and is what you Odin in with the 3-30 package. This is what you want, and need to put on the phone before anything else. There's also orange, which ROM Manager installs -- it's still buggy, so don't flash it.

cwmall is cwm2.5. The "all" means it works for amend and edify scripting... listen the guide works, if your getting signiture verification errors, then you mest be in the stock recovery instead of cwm2.5red. Do not use cwm3 as it wont allow nandroid backups on stock roms, which is why the root guide has cwm2.5 linked. Also after you odin cwm2.5, three finger directly into cwm and do not let it boot or else you have to reflash cwm in odin.

I must be. It's blue and says "Android system recovery <3e>" So did Oden actually fail? It looked good...

after you odin cwm, immediately three finger into cwm red by holding the power and volume up/down until you see the samsung logo appear the second time. pretty sure the guide explains this.

Well, it says
Quote:
7. Click START. When this process has finished, you'll be notified in Odin (succeeded 1 / failed 0) and your phone's screen will go blank.
....

9. Unplug your phone and re-insert the battery.

10. Press and hold BOTH volume buttons. While holding them, press the power button. Hold all three simultaneously until you see "SAMSUNG" appear. This will boot your phone into ClockworkMod Recovery. If your phone boots up normally here and not into recovery, just wait for it to boot up and then power it down and try again. It may take a couple tries for you to get it right.
It doesn't say anything about the Samsung logo appearing more than once, or about the possibility of booting into more than one recovery...I'll try again and see if I can get it to do something different.

Well, I got it to work!

Perhaps the problem was that after Odin finished, the phone rebooted rather than going to a blank screen, so I had to shut down and then try to get the red recovery. I found an auto-reboot checkbox on Odin and unchecked that; then the phone didn't go blank either, it stayed on the download screen and I had to pull the battery.

Or perhaps the problem was I had to hold the buttons longer, until the Samsung logo appeared, disappeared, and appeared again?

After rebooting and verifying I have root, I tried getting back into red recovery and found I couldn't - is it once-only per Odin flash?

Anyway thanks for your patience and I'm glad to be rooted. Now I can debloat (I'm planning to buy Titanium or maybe Rom Toolbox) which was my main goal.
