Using my google voice number for people to call me with do i use my minutes of data?

Minutes. Unless you sign up for a VOIP provider and configure it.

also if u use GV's voicemail service to receive ur messages it burns ur minutes too, had to learn that the hard way when i found a lot of my minutes mysteriously being used even tho i hadnt used the phone in awhile

So if I just use my google voice number and not the at&t phone number it is not VOIP and still just minutes?
