Default HTC Hero, Poor Signal & NO 3g "3" Network

Hey there,
I recently got my Htc Hero Uk "Chin" Model Phone its running 2.1 Firmware version,
and other than it not being the fastest thing in the world I get very poor signal. I also cannot receive 3G signal I can only get "h" this phone was previously orange but was unlocked, I have no other knowledge at all. I need to sort this out its driving me crazy! Rooting what ever it takes Im a noob at andriod's but everyone was there at one stage and id really appreciate any help you guys/gals could give! thank you regards robert.

+ The signal is fine with a orange sim card in it seems to pick up the 3g network and the 3 network sim card is fine I get full signal in another phone.

I'm on TELUS, a Canadian carrier here that operates an HSPA+ (and only that, no 2G) network. I'm on my Legend, and the "H" can only possibly be connected to their network and i receive 3G speeds to my mobile device.

Oh yeah, TELUS used to carry the Hero. I can assure you that H = 3G.

...if I'm wrong, FFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU-
