Problems with activesync

I have run into a strange problem with my wife's MT4GS. I am able to add her work account and have syncing working properly. However when the acct. is installed her messaging app force closes and she is unable to send and receive texts.

I have contacted tmo and HTC, but neither seems to have a solution. I have tried doing a master reset and tried both k9 and touchdown.

Tmo claims the problem is that exchange is not compatible with 2.3.4. But I did get the account and messaging to work on my nexus.

Her grace period expires tomorrow so I'd like to either get this resolved or take the device back. She receives a data stipend for the phone so exchange access is mandatory.
