That's funny as Motorola lists retail on the phone at 589.99. As does Verizon.

The Bionic is a Verizon only device. It was only made in 4G LTE and CDMA. It wont be released anywhere else. The RAZR on the other hand will be released worldwide and the bootloader will be unlocked if the carrier allows it. Even if there was a European Bionic with an unlocked bootloader it wouldn't do us any good because our bootloader is still locked. Which, from my understanding, it wont be able to be unlocked unless there is official firmware for the Droid Bionic pushed from Motorola that unlocks it. Any firmware from a phone on a different carrier wouldnt be official for our device so we couldnt push it to it.

Default fastboot

is there a reason why we can't use fastboot to flash the mbmloader_ns.bin in the same fashion that the script is? Seems too easy...

I believe part of the issue is the radio and loader version unmatching

Flashing the mbmloader is a guarranteed way to hard brick the phone. The mbmloader is what actually stores and checks the encrypted bootloader keys.
