cant tether with tmoble g1

hey all i'm trying to get my tablet to regonize my fathers htc g1. it will work on my vibrant running cm7 but can't seem to get it to work with the g1...any ideas?

I had to make the device an open access point.
With encryption on, i wasn't been able to connect.

got it to connect using open access point, but kept dropping after a few seconds, never did get a solid connection. htc eris running open garden on ccm7 to a sony 32gig s. also tried the xoom bluetooth hack with no luck either
