Does the XTC Clip supports the HTC Status (USA AT&T custom version of the ChaCha)?

As the titles says, does the XTC Clip works on the HTC Status? Anyone with some experience on it?

Just to explain: XTC Clip works on any HTC phone (hardware dependent). What you are asking is if it's working some custom ROM (software dependent). Get it?

And btw, Status = ChaCha. Status is not a custom AT&T version of ChaCha, it's just that HTC had a legal issue with the www.chacha.com company so they had to use a different name for marketing.

I would have thought that the Status was actually a custom version of the ChaCha as AT&T uses network frequencies that no one else uses which I suspect would require a different radio chip and radio firmware. Also the Status comes with all the AT&T crapware loaded and has a few features blocked (like USB tethering and wifi hotspot) unless you pay for them.

Ledrocnoc is correct. The HTC Status, while very similar to the unbranded ChaCha, is a little different. As you wrote, the radio is different in order to handle the 850/1900MHz range for AT&T's 3G network, as well as some differences in the front-facing camera, and of course the included software:

(yes, there is an FM radio in the Status, despite what GSMArena.com indicates)

Regarding the USB tethering and hotspot, even if those were available for "free" on the Status, AT&T will likely catch you anyways and make you pay. I know this for a fact because on my previous phone (unlocked GSM Palm Treo Pro), I was able to do internet sharing via USB and I used a software called WMWifiRouter to do hotspot. If you use it very sparingly (as in a few hundred KBs every few weeks or so), AT&T probably won't catch you. But if you use the tethering component regularly and consume a lot of bandwidth, they will catch you and issue you a warning. This happened to me with the Treo Pro when my wife used her laptop tethered to my phone to watch a movie via NetFlix. Of course, I immediately stopped internet sharing due to AT&T's insane $45 monthly tethering fee that they threatened to start charging me. I believe AT&T performs deep-packet inspection to see what is being sent through their networks and if they haven't caught you yet, they will soon.

So, yes, while the HTC Status has "locked" tethering, you would likely end up paying for the extra tethering cost eventually anyways if they catch you.

Not necessarily... I've been doing it for a while right now on my Nexus One and I have been using a VPN (on the laptop side) to hide the traffic from AT&T. Haven't had any problem so far :)

Which brings a follow up question: if I unlock / root my HTC Status, is there a WiFi hotspot app out there that I can use?

Actually you're both wrong. HTC ChaCha = Status. Regardless of what the software on it is (even if this software does limit some of it's functionality), the hardware is HTC ChaCha (it's like saying that if you put windows mobile on it it's not ChaCha anymore). For example you do have the full radio, up to 2100, but your operator's network has a maximum of 1900 MHz. The phone will still display 3G only or E for edge. Just do a little (official) check before making statements: http://www.htc.com/europe/smartphones/htc-chacha/#specs

It's there, black on white, the network speeds for Europe and "Other"
There are two hardwares, both of them are HTC ChaCha or HTC Status, doesn't really matter as it's the same phone.

Please use gsmarena as a rare quote in any statements as it's an unreliable site.
To explain my opinions: I work with phones 8 hours a day. (I'm a QA engineer testing the bluetooth connectivity between car-kits and phones/bluetooth devices). I have tested over 450 phones, from Motorola Razorz to LG Chocolate (yes, apparently some people still have this one) to the latest devices. I usually checked gsmarena 4-5 times a day a year ago until the day that I actually held a phone in my hand that they made a review about. The review was all wrong and the specs page were not even the same as the maker (of the phone). It's a good site, for phone's photos. I also used iPhone 4 before it even hit the market in Romania and gsmarena was useless about it. (we receive phones from makers usually before they hit the market in Europe).

Anyways, we drifted off.. the thing is that XTC Clip was designed for ANY HTC phone so it will work for older and newer HTC's.

So they both have 1.3mp front-facing cameras, but the cha-cha is being restricted to vga through software??? (status has 1.3mp front camera, while cha-cha has only vga)

The Status only has a vga front facing according to the specs on HTC.com. So nobody has S-Offed the Status yet?
