I've followed the instructions to the letter, but the tool tells me my CPUID is incorrect. I'm pretty sure it isn't. I added the zero on the front, no 0x like the other chap...any ideas?
Well...no!!! If you cannot enter a valid cpuid then you cannot run the tool

...the whole reason I'm doing this is that I've so far failed to go straight to ICS as I can't seem to get it to go into bootloader when trying to reflash the bootloader iwith nvram.
It's an A501 on 3.2, Orange variant.
The ics nvflash needs that same cpuid, so chances are thw flash failed because the cpuid was incorrect.
Do you have a custom recovery installed??
Do a quick nandroid backup ( just boot.img) will do
now go to the cwm folder on your sd card and open the backup folder
in the backup folder is a uid.txt file this is the cpuid you need.
Also, do you have Acer recovery Installer?? it will check what bootloader version you have
And what rom are you running???
Sorry, badly phrased, and replying from my phone now! I do have cpuid and sbk. Having tried numerous tools and methods, they all come back with the same problem. It seems apx is not working, so my tab never goes to download mode.
I am going to install linux and try from there insteas. I had a similair thing once trying to flash a stb. So far i tried win 7 x64, and win xp computers. Now tobtry a proper computer

Just wondering - what rom are u running now???
this method is usually used to put HC back on yr tablet
If you are still on the HC bootloader you should just be able to either OTA to ICS or flash an ICS rom then you can flash the patched bootloader
The backup I suggested you do is to verify your cpuid - this will only work if youre on the HC bootloader
To check the apx drivers are loading when they should, open device manager and then run the EUU, and check they install....i'm pretty sure though that you will not be able to get this far if your cpuid is wrong. Or try manually entering APX and use device manager again to see if the recovery drivers have installed.
knowing what rom and b/l you are currently running might help to piinpoint yr issue so we can provide the correct solution for you

ok. thanks for the help!
I actually have an A501 (but I understand for most purposes, it's the same), and I am trying to get Alexander V ICS ROM on it.
At the moment it has stock everything, at v3.2
I should be up front, it was a development device, so it probably does not receive OTA - this is what it had installed when it was given to me.
I started off using civato's guide. Auto, Manual - I tried the lot.
Then I tried this, and afterota.
I got my CPUID using the adb devices method, and at first thought it was the problem, so verified using the usbdevice utility thing.
Basically, end result is always the same. I can get phone into APX mode using either the tools, or the paperclip, and plugging into PC, it's detected, and I see it in device manager as Acer Recovery Boot driver (or something like that). Power light on, screen black (no writing).
If I try an nvram command passing the sbk, I get
Code:
rcm version 0X4
Command send failed (usb write failed)
And the various tools don't affect the device at all.
I would be quite happy just installing a custom HC ROM (at least as a start), but with stock recovery, I don't think it's possible, and I don't think I can change the recovery without nvram, is that right?
Thanks again for the help - I really appreciate it.
Why can't everything be as easy as flashing my old HTC Sapphire
P.S. Didn't try with Linux yet. Stuck late at work, and got a cold, so early night.

ok thats all good thanks for the info
I must say i havent come across your particular issue before
if there is a 'write failed' error its usually a wrong cpuid but it sounds like you've done everything to ensure its correct so we'll run with it oh...it does have more than 13 characters...doesnt it?? If its only 13 characters long then this is the ICS cpuid you need to use the 15 digit HC one...
next question...are you rooted?? or is this what you are trying to achieve??
ICSroot by blackthund3r is the tool to use for that and can be downloaded via "tegraowners" sorry cant post a link
then once thats done then install acer recovery installer which will install a custom recovery
then if you want you can flash the bootloader after that...may the acer gods be willing!!
you are able to flash a rom even if you have the stock recovery. You will need to use the update.zip method for that but at least you wont need yr cpuid, take a look at drkalo's thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276227
use METHOD 2 - its a bit involved in that it will flash "an UNSTABLE 3.1 ROM" it f/c all over the place but u only need to use this rom to root (use iconiaroot) then install acer recovery installer to put cwm on there so you can flash your chosen 501 rom both these apps can be downloaded here on xda....put both of these on yr sdcard with the update.zip
If this doesnt work i dont know what else to do...i dont know enuff about the ins and outs to say yr troubles are due to yr tab being a dev one...maybe if Moscow Desire sees this he maybe able to suggest something...
oh one other tip - on drkalos post he gives the steps for a 'hard reset' give it a go, its amazing how doing this can solve a heap of issues....good luck!!

yep, 15 char CPUID+ leading 0

Even this is not working - It just sticks at "Booting recovery kernal image, although maybe I need a specific A501 rom for this.

I can't even get hard reset to work. THere's something odd about this tab. Daft thing is, I'm not that bothered about hacking it, it's just that Wi-Fi performance is so awful, and I heard ICS improves things (as does replacing the antenna, which I will also do), so I thought I would just upgrade it.
Maybe I should just buy a Nexus 7. I just spent £12 on the antenna though.
Using the manual flash to unstable rom to get root worked, and from there I could install a custom recovery. That allowed me to flash a better HC ROM anayway, so I'm 50% there.
I still am having issues in APX mode (same as before), so I cna't get an ICS bootloader on, but I'll try what IO have and see if the new kernal improves Wi-Fi. I might be ok where I am .

??? arrrggghhhh.....no dont need a 501 specifically, u just want recovery so u can flash a rom...although u can get 501 rom off the russian forums...if you're fluent in russian of course...google translate doesnt work the best or try this walkthrough here - has a few more details, where it says to use the 3.2.1 just swap in yr a501 rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1623294

thats weird wifi was pretty good on HC...maybe it is b/c its a dev device...cant see why it would be that different though, one thing you can be sure of with the acer, its never a dull moment!!!
check out this thread regarding write fail errors, http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...php?p=27852564 there maybe something of use in there for you...sorry couldnt get u fixed
edit: just read that ICS update is due out july 11, maybe yr tab will update and solve a few issues...then u can look forward to flashing the patched bootloader, lol
no idea what the APX issue is. If I ever find out, I'll post here in case someone else has it. My guess is PC <-> tab interface weirdness. I couldn't reflash my Galaxy NExus the other day, and after 20 minutes mucking about, I tried a different USB cable and it was fine. Maybe I should try more usb cables.
Anyway, the ROM i've got has improve Wi-Fi. It's not continually dropping connections like it was previously, so I'm actually pretty happy now :)
Thanks for your help, I'd probably never had got there otherwise, as I was pretty exhausted searching through old messages at the point. The direct link was what I needed!
