What you currently have is a leaked version of Gingerbread. I would suggest that you follow the guide in the Original Post of this thread, using method 2c to root, which will install a rooted UCKH7. After that, you can use any one of step 3 to install a custom kernel without getting the yellow triangle. After that, you will be able to install a custom rom if you want to. Read the guide through until you have a basic understanding of it, then go for it.

Thanks man!
Is it normal for mobile companies to sell new phones with a leaked version of gingerbread?
OK, Next weekend I will read through your guide and root my phone. Can't wait!!

An emphatic NO!

Are you sure you have an I777? If not, you're in the wrong forum. The specs you listed do *not* belong to the I777. Could you have bought the I717 Skyrocket? If so, don't use my guide or anything in this forum.

That thought kind of crossed my mind when I was rooting my phone, but then I realized that the phone had to be in download mode or the flash in step 2c wasn't going to happen. Maybe a note in step 1 that says "You must do this before any of steps 2a-2d"?

Thanks for the guide, it made rooting my phone easy.
Step 1 is independent to other steps.
If they know, surely know, then they don't have to perform step 1 but if they don't, then they should.
If they surely know AND using step 2a, there is no need for the note.

I bought my phone @ Mobile City Online.
It shows Model number SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 in settings(about phone)
Kernal Version 2.6.35.7

I wonder if the company buys directly from samsung and samsung just throws the version they have on it. As if I were to buy it from AT&T, they would use their version of gingerbread? Does that make sense?
Underneath the battery it even says: FCC ID:A3LSGHI777 along with the Model number. I guess I do need to jump on the root bandwagon. 8-)
Thanks for all your help.
Just did a FCC ID search, and it also lists it as an SGH-I777. Pretty weird!

I am looking for the easiest way to just root.
I have rooted my Infuse with SuperOneClick, and also used GTG's unbricker(for trying the leaked version of GB and then reverting back to Froyo).

I am kinda nervous with rooting my GSII cause I don't want the "Triangle Of Death" and any other hiccups that may come my way.
I777 official roms are UCKH7 (2.3.4) and UCKK6 (2.3.6) there was never an official release of 2.3.5. There was a leak UCKJ1, which may have been, and probably was 2.3.5, but I never looked at it. It was the first leak after the phone was released, if I remember correctly. So, it appears that the phone you got is probably not brand new. It may have been purchased to be resold. At the very least, someone would have had to unlock it. Also, someone somewhere put that leaked firmware on it, as well.

The only UCKJ1 leak that I know about was a one-click downloader that included a modified secondary bootloader. It is therefore possible that you have the modified bootloader, although there are ways of installing that leak without installing the bootloader. So I would suggest that you follow step 1 in the OP of this thread, and compare the the actual printout on screen with the one shown in the guide. Also if you could post a screen shot of it, I'd like to see it.

As far as rooting, I would suggest that you follow the guide in the OP. You should use either step 2c or 2d to root using the UCKH7 plus root package. But I'd like to verify your bootloader before you start doing anything.

creepyncrawly, thanks so much for the write up. I was on the fence for a long time about rooting my SGS II. This worked so well I cannot believe it.

It also saved me when I semi-bricked due to a bad downloaded kernel.

Yep, you were right. They flashed the leaked version on it and tipped the counter to 1.
I can't post external links untill I get enough posts... 8-(

The main problem with the custom bootloader, it was modified so that the jig will not reset the flash counter. So, you first need to determine if a jig will reset the flash counter, and if not, you might want to flash the original UCKH7 secondary bootloader back onto the phone so that you can reset the flash counter to 0.

Or...

Ask them to exchange it, or refund your money.

Did you look at the picture?
I went ahead and ordered a jig from the trusted place that is mentioned in this topic.
I'll let you know when it comes in and we will see what we have to do next.
For this being a leaked version, I have not had any problems, bugs, glitches, or anything out of the ordinary from this phone.

Now that we have discovered this, I was scared that my Int. Galaxy Note would be the same way. Considering that I also bought it from them. But I put it in download mode and everything looks good!

There is nothing different than the stock bootloader shows. You'll have to try the jig to find out if needs to be changed.
