It's because aml_autoscript boot method is not implemented on ics and memory mapping is not compatible with cm9. cm9 is based on the same kernel as ginger.

Thanks, I've just downgraded to GB and now I have CWM working!
I do have one more issue though (sorry). Having done this:

I can get into CWM. I also have the update.zip on the SDCard and then I did this:

How do I then boot into CM9? Rebooting with either or neither of the volume buttons pressed just brings it back to CWM.
